Hi Everyone,

I've been computerless for some three weeks now:( Am up and running as of today, but have run into problems already.

I've reinstalled PSE3 on my new computer. My old hard drive is on the new computer and I'm slowly sifting through and moving or deleting stuff, but how on earth do I get all my pictures from the old hard drive to the new one??

Hey Beyla,

A good way to transfer pictures would probably be to use cd's, because pictures are small files and you can fit a lot on a disc.

hope that helps!

Hey Bayla

Why not just leave them on the old hard drive and keep 2 HDs in your computer?

I can't find them! When I click on the organiser in new PSE3 on the new hard drive there's no pictures there, but when I click on the organiser in the old PSE on the old hard drive I still can't see any thing!  How do I get the old catalogue into the newly installed PSE3??

Sorry, I don't use the organizer so I'm not sure about moving the catalogue.

I think the problem is that the photos are now on your "d" drive (or whatever letter your second drive is) instead of your "c".

There is probably a way to move the catalogue file, but it won't find your photos either, if they are on the "d" drive. You would have to reconnect them all or move them to wherever they were.

Personally I like having my photos (and music) on the drive that does NOT have my operating system. that way if I have to reload Windows I don't have to worry about losing everything. I do have stuff backed up on and external HD as well but I'm not as diligant as I should be about backing up.

I know .. not much help. Hopefully someone who uses the organizer will be along and have some better idieas.

Panic over.....

I finally found them on my 'g' drive and copied them to the organiser, complete with tags etc. Phew! I didn't want to have to do that again, and I was really scared I'd lost all the beautifully layered pdf files for good!

I'll now confess.....for the past year I was running a computer with only a 20GB harddrive (256 ram) and no CD/DVD burner...after filling up a gb of memory on my camera I had nowhere to back up anything to, and then the hard drive got well and truly full and everything was running mega slow. Now I've got more memory than I know what to do with and am in the process of backing up all my precious photos to DVDs. I also couldn't install my Wacom tablet due to lack of memory. And now? WOW I can't believe that PSE3 can run so fast:D

Thanks for the advice...sometimes it helps just to 'speak' things out with you lot, and suddenly the penny drops and I know what to do.

Great news. :)

"G"??? how the heck did it get way up to that letter???? :D

Sorry I wasn't any help with the tags. I really don't have a clue when it comes to how/where the organizer stores the info.

Gary,

Yeah, I thought that was funny too - A is the floppy, C & D are the new HD, E & F are the CD/DVD drives ( I think one reads, the other writes) Not sure why there isn't a B, had one on the old computer - a zip drive!

Wendy,

Thanks, I didn't cope! I used to come down in the morning, click on something and then go away & put the kettle on & make the toast whilst waiting for a page to load up!! My DH used to complain that the computer was a huge time waster, but I pointed out that it was taking me sooooo long to do anything that it would be less of a time waster if we replaced it and got loads of memory.;) ....and after me spending nearly three weeks driving back & forth to his ofice to use the computer, he realised the truth and now I'm floating on cloud nine :)

Now, how do I get my Grants tools into the newly installed PSE3? I've found them in Windows Explorer, but I'm not sure what to do next. Any help very gratefully received:)

I'd wondered that too - I have A through L doing various things but no B  - must be doing something somewhere but what I've no idea.

Hi Bayla ...

Oh you really must be so happy :)

Best way with Grant's tools is just to download them again:

http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/index.html

the instructions on how to install are there too ... let me know how the install goes ...

You typically have to set up your "B" in the system bios. It used to be used for the old 5 1/2" floppies. On my system (a little old now :D ) I have an option for the two floppy sizes and a zip drive. I have neither hooked up, so no B for me.:D

FYI. The letter "B" is typically NOT assigned - this is not unusual. If you have both "E" & "F" assigned they represent two different drives. Do you have two CD\DVD drives? Do you have card readers on your computer? These are assigned drive letters too. You can check on your drive letter assignsments using the following: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Mgmt. > Disk Mgmt. The upper box shows your hard drives and partitions, if any. Scroll the lower box to see all drive letter assignments. You can also change drive letter assignments here. Hope this will be of some help.
