Hi,
I have elements 4 on trial at the moment. When I crop to 6x4 with 300 resolution - it won't print at that. I get the following message in the print preview "Image will print at less than 220 ppi at the selected size" How do I overide this? The image quality is quite inferior to what I got with Element 2.

Shivers,
I wonder if this is a limitation built in to the trial version. I don't have any such problem with the purchased version of PSE4.

Shivers,
Try to print fom the Editor, rather than the Organizer. You won't get this error message.

It's in the preferences...change units and rulers from cm ...or whatever metric is listed...to inches and the warning will disperse.

There is a know error in PSE3 that when rulers are set to centimeters or millimeters rather than inches, PE3 does not figure resolution correctly. To solve the problem in PSE3 all you had to do was change your unit of measure to inches in the preferences.
However in any case the error message could be ignored with no loss of print quality. I am wondering if the problem persists in PSE4?
Your printing problems may have more to do with color settings, calibration, or print profiles than the 220 ppi error.

Hi again,
Interesting thought that you could be limited to 220 ppi or below if you are running a trial version. Does anybody else have any ideas on this? I have a day or two left and I want to be sure I don't have this problem when I upgrade.
I tried printing from the organiser rather than the editor but I still get the same error message "image will print at less than 220 ppi at the selected size".
I took a photo that I printed with elements 2 and printed it again using elements 4 and there is a big difference.
thanks again

Hi Shivers ...
As far as I am aware there isnt any limitation with the trial version ... except that it expires after 30 days :)

Jodi is right, of course. I have the purchased ver 4 of PSE and if I switch Print Size to inches the baffling *Image will print at less than 220 ppi* disappears. Rather odd this quirk hasn't been rectified if, as I hear, it already existed in ver 3.
May I add here my own query on printing? I often get the warning in Organizer: *Your selection includes photos with print image matching (PIM) and/or Exif Print data that provides enhanced printing to Epson printers. This data will be altered if the photo is edited.*
All this is obscure to the newbie I am - isn't there a way of transferring this PIM/Exif Print data be into the edited version of the image? I suspect I'm talking rubbish though...

Sonia - the PIM information is added by the camera when the photo is taken and if you're using a different brand of printer than Epson that warning is meaningless and can be ignored.

Sonia,
I have wondered about that warning also, because I get it in the organizer when switching to the Editor - and I do have an Epson printer. Apparently, the camera adds the information to the picture when taken, and this is attached to the file when loaded into the Organizer, which uses the data to do automatic color correction. When switching to the Editor, that data is removed so that you can use the Editor to do color correction (I think-newbie here myself). Strangely enough, however, you don't get that message if you open the picture file directly in the Editor, without going to the organizer. Also, I get better quality pictures when I print from the Editor, versus printing from the Organizer, with no corrections made to the photo. Perhaps this is due to this extra PIM/Exif data interfering? Can someone help us understand?
Thanks!

I've just tried printing on my old Epson the same image both from the Organizer and from the Editor. I can detect no difference at all between the two printouts. May-be this PIM relates only certain types of Epson printers, newer than mine? All kind of puzzling to me too

I have always got this warning with both PSE 3 and 4, when attempting to print at lower than 220 (or whatever) dpi. YES the quality is inferior but when you try to crop too much and blow things up. I always print in editor.
However I expect it when it occurs and you have to pay the price for what you want I am learning (still) the problems this causes, but for WIP or tests or just to see what a print looks like it it serves a purpose....

Hi Sonia,
I've noticed the difference, especially when printing photos with a lot of red - I see more of a red color cast when printing with the Organizer on my Epson R300 than in the Editor. It is very slight, but I can notice it. Probably because I know to look for it. I was trying to calibrate my monitor & printer at one time, and got some advice from someone who has the same kind of printer. If you print directly from the printer, the default is to use the PIM/Exif data, and you get sharper looking pictures. When I turned this option off, my prints looked just like they do in Elements on the screen. In some instances, I took both prints from Editor & Organizer and laid them close to each other to see the difference. But if you don't see it, then that's great too - you're getting consistent quality. It's something that I noticed, using both Elements 2, and then also when I upgraded to 4.0, so I thought I'd mention it.

Hi Guys,
I have changed the unit of measurement to inches and that has got rid of the error message "Image will print at less than 220 ppi at the selected size".
I also changed the paper profile and the quality has returned.
Thanks again
