I have used the screen mode layer to lighten this picture then I get here and I don't know what to do to darken just the light on Sydney's face. This probably has to do with using a mask which is just another thing I don't know how to do....??? Thanks

Have you tried the burn tool, with a very, very low setting (I'm thinking 3%) with a high feathered brush?

I really think you need to learn about using masks. They are so very useful and that is what I would use for this. You don't have to just use black and white on a mask but can use shades of grey or lower the opacity of your brush and 'build up' the layer slowly. In the beginning they can be confusing, but once you get the hang of it, they are so powerful.

Hi there

Here is another way that gives you control.

Open a Levels adjustment layer and click OK make no adjustments.

Change the blendmode to Multiply

Now click on the mask then press Ctrl+I on a PC….. Cmd + I on a Mac... I think, do not include the + sign

The darkness is now gone but you can apply it selectively now.
Change the foreground color to white and pick a soft brush.
Now when you paint with white on your picture the Multiply is applied. To build the color slowly, reduce the opacity of your brush. If you apply to the wrong area just switch your brush color to black and take it back off.

If the darkening is not enough then add another levels layer and repeat the above procedure.

There is not much detail in the side of the face so perfect cannot be achieved but you can make the cutie better.

There are ways to clone texture back into the side of the face but that is another story.
