The Sharpen video by David Cross is very instructive. But, how does one save the picture. Once he gets all the layer complete does he delete some, go to save as, go to save. Help me out here. Sorry for the dumb question.

Hi ...
Its really up to you ... some people keep all of the layers and others don't. In this example I would probably have worked on a duplicate of the original image (so that I didn't change that) then when I had finished I would have flatten the new image and saved it as a best quality jpg with a new name ... :)

Hi Bob,
With Wendy's example, use "save as" which will allow you to save your edited image with a different file name, thus preserving the original image you started with (the image you started with remains saved, and unchanged, under the original file name).
"Save" will save the changes over the image you start with, thus you lose the original.
I use "save as" all the time so as not to risk accidently saving over the original image.
Hope this helps...
