Here is a way to make a vignette that the size and color can be adjusted at any time. You can also drag the vignette to other files.

Open your photo to vignette or stamp a visible layer to work on.

Make a selection for the vignette it can be a classic oval but any size or shape can be made with the various selection tools.
When you are finished with your selection press Select>Inverse.

With your selection still active;
Press Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid…. Click OK
Use the color picker to choose a color then click OK.

To feather the edges of the vignette press Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur
Adjust slider until the amount of feathering is satisfactory.
Press enter your vignette is complete

Now, or any time in the future you want to adjust the size of the vignette press Filters>Adjustments>Threshold
Your feathering will disappear and a threshold adjustment box will appear.
Move the slider in the threshold box and the vignette size will change. When you are done resizing your vignette press OK.

To re-apply the feather just press Ctrl F or re-apply the gaussian blur thru the filter menu.

As long as you keep your layers intact and have a feather applied to your picture you can change the size as many times as needed. You can also change the color or amount of feathering with the gaussian blur at any time.

Hi Butch ...

Thank you for the tut ... its really good and will save a lot of time for people who use a vignette effect on quite a few images. Great idea saving the template and using it again !! :)

And a technique that doesn't work like this with CS2. See, PSE is superior!

My Bryce ...

You did find an old thread :) ... last post on this one was March 2006

It works in just the same way in CS2 ... Did you use:

Layer>New Fill Layer

and threshold can be found under:

Image>Adjustment>Threshold ..

Wendy :)

I'm glad this thread was resurrected. Butch's technique is great and the tut easy to follow...

OK, Butch, there's gotta be a first dumb question...

You say, Open your photo to vignette , what does that mean, "open to vignette"?

I'm using PSE 5 and, other than making an oval marquee selection, the only other vignette technique I'm familiar with is using the Correct Camera Distortion filter. And, if I do a "help search" on the word vignette, that filter is what i get.

Is there some sort of "open" procedure to follow?

I'll have to play with it Wendy. I thought I did that, but I must have missed a step because mines a mess. Thought it was a CS2 problem, but if what you are saying is true, the problem lies about 18-24 inches above the keyboard. :)

Butch, this is great. I love being able to understand what I'm doing; that is what's so nice about the way you outline steps. This color isn't the greatest - I was just playing to make sure I understood how to change colors and shapes.

Wendy, thanks again for explaining, a month or so ago, how you deal with those photosensitive glasses. With little Chris visiting, I can get lots of practice :) I used the technique you explained; then I added a blank layer on top, sampled some pink skin from the cheeks, and tried painting just a bit of color behind the glass.

This works great - a lot better than what I had tried before your help.
