Hi All,

This is my first post in this forum - and there's nothing like hitting the ground running and posting with a good question first off! ;)

I've got myself a Canon 20D, and have recently been playing around with the Black & White Parameter settings and taking some photos (funnily enough!).

I uploaded these into PSE4, and when I view them in Photo Browser - the colour reappears so my black and white pictures suddenly aren't!! :o The photo's are "RAW" (.CR2) files - if you're wondering.

I've hunted around the settings but can't find anything that would refer to what I'd almost call the "pre-processing" the thumb-nails in the photobrowser - can anyone suggest anything else to look at?

Many thanks in advance!

Matt

Welcome to the forum - I'm guessing here as I don't have that camera but I'm pretty sure that the reason is that RAW files are the raw image data straight form the sensor which, of course contains the colour information. Things like B&W, sepia toning etc are all post processing in the camera so won't show in the RAW file.

It's probably better to do B&W in Elements anyway - much more flexible than what your camera would do.

I have some friends on Pott Row, in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. You anywhere near there?

Firstly, thanks everyone for taking the time to reply & welcome me! :D

Tony - that's great, but it's a pity that the Photo Browser can't leave a photo as it's shot and not try and automatically pre-process and "improve" it! Anyway that can be switched off, so the thumbnails are "As Shot"?

Wendy, I'm hailing from Bristol and nkeevers - Kings Lynn is the other side of the country so no I don't know anyone there :)

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Welcome to the forums...:)

The Photo Browser doesn't do any processing on images... As Tony said, when you shoot in RAW, your 20D does virtually no processing to the images at all. So if you shoot in B&W mode, the RAW image recorded is still colour. Your 20D acn show you B&W images when shooting, but you are looking at a JPEG version of the shot - not the RAW file.

You will need to do any processing, such as B&W conversion, in software such as Adobe Camera Raw.

If you want an "as shot" B&W image, then you could shoot in RAW + JPEG.

Hope this helps.

Mike
