View Full Version : Working with Cubes?

Hi,

Have been trying to paste photos onto cube figure, using the vizros plug-in. Is there a good way to control the handles on transform/perspective? I am holding down Control.Alt.Shift, but it seems to go awry quite easily...

Thanks,

Dick

I'm not sure how that plugin works, but I know from the one in Scotts' book, I found it easier to just hold the CTRL key and position each corner independant of the other. Just don't hit commit until it is right. After that, it is a pain in the butt to get it right.

Which plug-in are you using? I've used the box one and you don't need to do any transforming of the images - it does it all for you (just have to load images for the 3 sides of the cube that are visible.)

Just has to be an easier way....I go crazy tryng to make the photo fit. Sometime two corners seem to move together....???

At the onset, let me say I do not know what the "Vizros" plug in is. Then let me follow by saying, I may be missing the point here, but why are you pasting into the cube and involving transform perspective?

I read this as...you want to place photos in perspective on the surfaces of a cube. If this is not the case, please discard the following. But if that is it, then why not:

Create your cube with Filter/3 D Transform; drag your photos one at a time into the cube image, control held down to position corner by corner, then the same with the photos for the other surfaces. This is based on Dave Cross's videos in the Subscriber section...Presents Parts 1 and 2. It works great for photos as well as the wrapping paper the he uses in the exercise. It would seem easy to go this route rather than create a technique using transform perspective feature.

Tony, you are right about Vizros filter...just figured out how to get two photos on a cube....still working on the third.

ATR, thank you as well for your suggestion. I will give a try tonight. Remember this newbie is a "very new" newbie, and not all that quick sometimes.....

The instructions for that Vizros box filter aren't too helpful. There may be a better way but to get the first one one I had to put the image at the centre of a bigger canvas, select the image and apply the filter to the selection. Then you can just add the other images to the other sides. Maybe someone who's used it more can post better instructions.

Hi 'when using the cube filter you do the following,
You are given 3 positions X,Y and Z.
Pick your side select image and everything is done for you.

Kev: Can you expand a bit on the first step. I have to have an image open to apply the filter and when I run the filter it puts it on the sides OK and then I can add different images to the other sides but the resultant box is too big for the canvas so you lose part of the image (and Reveal All won't work to show the missing bits). Only way I could make it work was to make the first side a selection of a larger image.

From your note is sounds like you don't have this problem.

I'm using it in PSE3 not PSE4 - I wonder if there might be a difference or am I missing a key step

Tony,
When you select your image and then go to the cube filter, you should get a dialogue box.
Top left you have positions where you want the image
then dimensions for your cube this allows you to set the size of side of your cube.Under this is solid or image, if you choose image, you can select a different image for each side.
Right hand side you have the view angles, this you adjust to get the cube orientated the way you like it. Then you have the light source to set the light and shadow.
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, the best thing to do is play with the dimensions etc until you're happy and then try it, remember you can always trash it and start again.

Hi,
I've done this screen shot to show how I set it up for a cube or box with only 1 image.
It works the same in PE 3 and 4

Thanks Kev: Now I've got it - turns out the image I was experimenting with was too small - it was only 200x200 pixels and when you use a 200 pixel setting in the filter the rest of the box goes off the page. Started with a bigger image and it worked fine.

Thanks for that explanation Kev, and the screenshot :)

I also have the viros plug-in but could never work it out. I just did it by going to Render>3DTransform, I found it much easier doing it like that. But I tried it out the way you mentioned and looked at your screenshot and.....it worked :) Thanks

Mel,
it makes me very happy that you've cracked the cube with Vizros.
With your beautiful photographs I'm expecting to see something special.

Well I finished the cubes, although I just left it with the kaleidoscope........I'm really loving this plug-in :D

The top left cube shows the kaleidoscope and the bottom right are the original photos.

I saw this thread and downloaded the plugin (which I learned to do last night!!!) and did my box which worked right away and I was pleased and then when I saved it and enlarged it the subject has Vizros all over it. Is this a pay for plugin? I can't seem to find out. If it is a pay one - is it worth it?

Thanks.

OK I figured that one out by registering - Duh! But now I cannot figure out how to move the cube around the screen. Is there somewhere I can read about these plugins and how they work? Thanks anyone.

Shari: To move it around just put the box on a layer with a white background, select the background (with the magic wand), invert the selection and then you can copy and paste it into another image and move it around. As for the best place to read about the Vizros plug-ins and how they work it's probably right here. Ask away - a number of us are playing with them and figuring it out :)
