I just purchased a Nikon D70. When dowloading the pictures to the computer, I noticed that the picture numbers start at DSC00001. Unfortunately, I already have pictures in my computer numberd DSC00001 through DSC02670 which were taken with an older camera. Does anyone know if you can change the settings in the D70 to have the picture numbers start at a higher number, i.e., DSC03000? I've looked through the camera manual, but couldn't find an answer. Any help would be appreciated.

I've been drooling over getting a D70 - but just couldn't come up with the bucks. There is a D70 forum in yahoo that they are really good about answering questions. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check out yahoo. I just thought someone here may know the answer. By the way, I've drooled over this camera for awhile now. Just had to take the plunge and buy one. -Pauline

I've gone through my Magic Lantern book for my D70 and tried searching at www.nikonians.com but can't find anyplace that tells me we can choose a number to start the numbering sequence with.
Could you just put all the "old" pix into a folder together and run them throug h the PSE3 multiple file "renamer" to add a couple extra characters to their numbers?
Or put all the new pix into specific folders that won't get the "old" pix mixed in with them?
I don't have any better answers.
Awesome camera isn't it!?

Ok seeing no one know how to do this let me take a crack at it. Format a memory card use Nikon's in camera format is the easiest way. Put the card into your card reader and access it through your computer. You will typically have a folder on the card that is 100NCD70. Take one of your previous images and load it to this folder. Place the card in your camera and the next photo you take will be one number larger that they number of the image you placed on your camera. An example would be if you take the first image you expose on the D70 (DSC00001) and rename it on you computer DSC02999 the next image you take will be DSC03000 and if you don't sent the camera to File Sequence = off the rest will be sequential. There may be other ways but this is one I have found that will work.

Keriann and Grant:
Thanks for your suggestions, too. I have been keeping the pics in separate file folders, but I am worried that at some point in time they may get mixed up. Also, I thought it would be nice to be able to differentiate between the photos taken with my old Sony and the new Nikon. I know I would be able to tell this by date, nontheless, I would like to change the numbers.
Grant-- I believe you are correct on setting the file sequence. I am going to try this when I get home from work. That should solve all my problems, and I will know that all pics taken with number 3000 and up will be from the Nikon and they will not be repeated from the pics I took with the Sony.
I knew there were a lot of intellegent people on this board!!! Thanks everyone. --Pauline

I don't know about your camera, but my camera came with software that will batch rename and move the files. So, my camera starts at DSC0001 just like yours, but when I move it off the card (using the card reader in my printer, but using the software that came with my camera) I select all the files, select "Automatic Batch Rename" and when the window comes up I have it add the date and time the picture was taken to the name when they get copied over. So, now I have DSC000x_yyyy_mm_dd_hh_mm_ss.jpg. Never any confusion that way, since my camera can't take more than one picture a second. Then I open up PSE 3.0 to organize them.
Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestion, Trish. Actually, I haven't even installed the software that came with the camera, since I have been using PSE3 for everything. I just plug the camera into the computer and download directly into PSE. Maybe it would be helpful to install the software that came with it, at least just to see if it does something like yours does. I guess I was really hoping to be able to set it directly in the camera, since that would make life much easier. But hey, who ever said life was easy?
