Can anyone recommend a book along the lines of " Understanding SLR photography for beginner idiots".
Thank you.

Here is an online free book that you might find somewhat helpful
http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/enjoydslr/index.html
and here is a book I bought for my RebelXT and it is available for any camera model.

Another site full on information, like a course on Photography :

My preferred book :
Shooting Digital by Mikkel Aaland. Simple to understand, full of information.

I have Photoshop Elements 2 Solutions and Photoshop Elements 4 Solutions both by Mikkel Aaland. They were both great books to learn the basics of PSE. they didn't go into details and projects like my Scott Kelby book, but I refer to them all the time for basic info. Easy to read and clear, well written instructions. I'll bet the one you are talking about is excellent for basic digital photography.

Well, Mikkel won't explain the voltage going through the pixels' sensor, or the colour separation forced by the diamond shape of the sensor cells.. If you know what I mean. But you'll get a nice kick off.
However, if the goal is to learn about Aperture, Exposure, Flash photography, Macro, etc, then any regular book will help. Most digital photography book will deal with P&S, so you might want to look at a standard photography book for understanding of the basic principals of image shooting.

A book that I just picked up after browsing through lots in the store is 50 Fast Digital Camera Techniques 2nd Edition by Kevin Moss. The problem with a lot of digital photography books is that they waste too much space on post processing with Elements etc and I really didn't need that stuff as I already have more than enough Elements books. And then there are those that spend a lot of space discussing the pros and cons of different cameras and I don't need that either. This one has a bit of that stuff but concentrates mainly on using the camera and has some very good advice I thought.
One story he tells is being on a photoshoot at an air show and wandering around asking people shooting with digital cameras about the settings they were using - only 4 out of 12 were correct. He then gives some settings for different situations (eg ISO, fill flash, white balance, metering mode, exposure compensation etc) and then tells you to set your camera to those and do it in less than 20 secs. And don't read on until you can!
I haven't read on yet :)

Thanks, Tony, for the info on this book. It sounds like a good jumpstart that would get me using something besides green!

Kay,
Your colors are so brilliant. The circus ones are great & the butterflies are my favorites.

Thanks, Mary! The butterflies are from a butterfly garden that we go to every Spring. It's a great place to get pictures (and fun for my three year old daughter!) The clowns are great subjects, because they're so bright and animated. I think it would be hard to get a bad shot.

Kay ...
"Clowning around" is just so good ... the colours jump out at you. Its almost like being at the circus :)

I highly recommend "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. After I read his book, I decided to try the "manual" mode on my Nikon D50. I have not gone back to "auto" anything since! Great book for undestanding interplay between shutter speeds, aperture, and ISO.

Kay, the clown images are magic. Like Wendy said it is almost as good as being at the circus :)
