I use Elements 4 on an XP based desktop. Great program and looking forward to help from forum members as I get deeper into it ...

Having one significant ongoing issue ...

After editing photos I often have a problem getting Elements to close. The editor application (I'm almost always using the Quick Edit workspace) won't close, with the "End Now" button not working to close it, "Control Alt Delete" not working, etc. Usually I end up doing a hard power down and a restart, which works fine but can't be the "normal" method. Is there some solution for this?

I'm not sure if I've had the same issue with the Organizer workspace.

Thanks.

Hi Bruce ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

Hopefully one of the Windows users will be along soon and may be able to give you some help with this :)

Hi Bruce,

Welcome to the Forums...:)

Has PSE always been like this?

Yes, from the very first day. Had zero install problems.

Turning off Symatec, etc., does not appear to make any difference.

Ok... did you have NAV on during the install..?

You could try resetting the Preferences file, but I suspect you need to reinstall the program, making sure you disable NAV and any other adware.

To reset the Preferences, start PSE in EDitor, but straightaway hold down the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys together. Keep holding these keys until a windows comes up asking if you want to delete Settings, select Yes.

Let us know how you get on...

Do I have to uninstall before doing the reinstall?

Will I lose tags and collections, etc., that I've created?

Thanks.

Bruce,

Did resetting the Preferences not work then..? I suggest you try this first before re-installing.

If you do a standard uninstall & re-install you won't lose your tags etc.

I won't be back in the same city as my desktop until Friday ... the joys of living in one city and working in another.

What exactly do I do in the Preferences file?

Will report results over weekend.

Thanks.

The Preferences file is where PSE keeps your settings. This file is updated each time you close PSE, whether or not you've physically changed any settings in Edit > Preferences. The file can become corrupt, which can cause PSE to behave strangely. Resetting the Preferences file is the first troubleshooting step.

To reset the Preferences, start PSE in Editor, but straightaway hold down the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys together. Keep holding these keys until a windows comes up asking if you want to delete Settings, select Yes.

Reinstalling with ALL other programs turned off seemed to do the trick.

Thanks.

I have also experience this problem. In my case it seems to be more prone to happen when I had Outlook Express open. While I am not sure if this is Direct "cause or effect" the problem ended when I added more memory. While I had this problem I found that I could always back out ob Elements but doing a ctrl+alt+delete and clicking on the Processes tab and close Elements manually. Also when you are in Task Manager window go to Performance and check the CPU usage, I will hazard it is sitting at 100%

.
