View Full Version : Printing multiple in Organizer and single prints in Editor

In light of the color management thread that was started, I wanted to throw some thoughts out there. The printing options in the Organizer are limited compared to the Editor printing options. WHY? I dont know - one would think since it is within the same program they'd be the same. Maybe that could go on the wish list.
So, I was/am on the journey to get a print from Editor to match on screen or at least the color I want. I havent paid much attention to the few giveaway prints I have done from PSE since I got the program and my new Canon i9900. Well, if and when I get my prints to match onscreen (after running every scenario of printer profiles, color management, etc. ) I will be happy.... but... then I want to print that "color accurate" picture in wallets or several prints on a page. Guess where I have to print from? YUP, the Organizer... and the Organizer is going to give me a completely different output and I dont know the profiles and settings it uses to obtain it...
...back to square one... my picture doesnt match my onscreen image. I know monitor calibration is key too--so no argument there -- I am simply stating the differences between the Organizer and the Editor. It puts a huge cramp in what I am trying to accomplish!!
I vented. I feel better for now.

Historically, the Organizer wasn't really part of Photoshop. It's a software Adobe bought and later polished and published as Photoshop Album (version 1.0, and followed by 2.0). It was really a stand alone application, aimed at consumers mainly, to organize and classify their pictures, to offer the possibility of multiple prints to satisfy all the family, with limited editing ability (colour correction mainly).
Not exactly aimed at the advanced hobbyists we're seeing here.
Then, with Photoshop Elements 3, Adobe integrated PSA (Photoshop Album) to PSE. However, the integration was more like a package deal. You get more for the money, but not better (not in terms of slideshows on TV, printouts, etc.)
There was even a problem with PSA2 where the entire application wasn't colour managed. Some windows showed the pictures with a profile, some without.. oops!
And now, apparently, with PSE4, Organizer still shows some bugs. If you report them to Adobe, perhaps they'll get fixed in PSE5 or 6.
All this to say, it's a work in progress.

Beatrice....
Why do you say the Organiser is going to give you a different print output? Are you talking about printing creations or just multiple prints per page?
If it's not creations then you shouldn't see a difference, I don't. If you click More Options on the Print Preview page you'll see many Printer Pofiles to choose from - the only one missing is Printer Colour Management.
What settings are you using for Colour Management and Print Space?

The Organizer print options are missing basically one option that the Editor does have. I can open Organizer print a psd or jpg and the result is different. Why? Editor has the third option of Rendering Intent. I just stumbled on these settings and never really paid attention to it --until I need my wallets (need to print in Organizer) to look like the larger prints (which I printed in Editor). Maybe I always printed from Organizer so I didnt realize there was a difference (and again the thought, why would there be if it is the same program?). I thought I printed my 5x7 from Organizer. I have yet to duplicate even that first 5x7 photo as it first printed. My photo is more photo like and the print is appearing more artsy like effect.
See below to compare Windows XP menus for examples.
Here is the ORGANIZER print menus - I can select the specific Canon Matte Paper for Print Space (called Printer Profile in Editor) as shown from the menu (matches the Media Type in the first print menu). Normally all of my images have the Image Space as sRGB (I have sRGB selected in camera too). You will see there is NOT a third option listed under Color Management.

EDITOR PRINT MENU - Here you can see the third option available - Rendering Intent. This is another selection that gives different results. I dont have a clue which one of this setting is used in Organizer (which is 'hidden'). I was NOT getting good results from selecting my Canon papers from the Printer Profile selection (in Editor OR ORganizer). I am trying to leave both selections at sRGB. I dont know what Same As Source or Printer Color Management really do as a Printer Profile. These seem to do a better job than the specific Canon selections though (Canon MP1, etc)--that is strange.

For my Canon i9900 printer, I also have the option for Color Management, Auto or Manual. here is the manual selection - I can select the ICM tab or leave it like this and then select Photo or None. None is recommended if I am selecting a Printer Profile as in previous steps.

SO now that I have hopefully straightened out the options, you can see that they are numerous. The only option that I cannot be sure is the same from Editor to Organizer is the Rendering Intent option because it is missing in Organizer.

Ray, thanks for the insight on the program progress. It makes sense. From the consumer end it seems rather 'stupid' (for better lack of an intellectual term) to not have the same print settings on both sides of the program though!
Dont get me wrong--I love and adore this program. If I am coming across as angry or otherwise, it is just a flare of my frustration to get my images to print as they are "suppose to be"--consistently. The possible scenarios are up near 30 or even way more (with print profile, color management, printer management alone)... it would be nice to know that the program itself doesnt render different results when it shouldnt. Color management is not a fun topic altogether, as we all could agree.

wheeeee... I am posting to my own posts LOL ... just looked at the "Same as source" and "Printer Color Management" in the Editor print option. When they are selected, "Relative Colorimetric" is greyed out as the Rendering Intent option. Would this be an indication the Organizer is using the same for any of the Print Space options?
