Somewhere this morning I read how to put a frame around an image without flattening the image. My memory tells me something like this - put a new layer above last layer and fill it with 50% grey and change it to an overlay layer (so far so good, I can still see my image), then apply the frame - problem everything turns back to what it was before the 50% grey was made an overlay layer. What am I doing wrong

You aren't doing anything wrong...all layer styles after applied will revert the layer back to 'normal' blend mode...so, after applying style just switch it back to 'overlay' :)

....the best way to make the overlay grey layer....in the layers palette click on the little 'more' arrow and choose 'new layer'....set the layer to 'overlay' blend mode...then just below the 'fill with 50% grey ' will become active......check it. Done.

Jodi, I don't know what I am doing but I have got :-
a background layer
a gradient layer
a background copy 1
Then I click on "create an adjustment layer" and fill it with grey
change the opacity to 50%
change the layer to overlay
click on Jodi's style 6 #10 (screen changes back to 50% grey)
change the layer to overlay
and I can see my image again but there is no border :(
