I can't figure out how to copy/paste with these two tools. My book tells me everything but that. Maybe that is not what they are for?

Magnet lasso. I am able to take it around my object, but then once I meet, nothing. IF I drag the mouse up to menu, the magnet follows (much to my dismay!)

Magic tool: I like this one. I draw it, it selects, but not sure how to copy/paste into another layer/picture.

Is there a preferred method of all the selection tools to work with people?

Thanks for all the help!

With the magnetic lasso tool you have to be right on the starting point for it to link up properly.

Once you have a selection you can copy it to its own layer using CTRL+J

The magic is something I don't have in PSE 3 so someone else will have to help there.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

When you get back to the beginning click the mouse once to get the connection. Then when you have the marching ants you can edit>copy (control-c) ,move to target , edit>paste (control-v). (command on Mac). When you paste it will create a new layer in the target item. Be sure the bounding box is checked on and then you can move and resize the copied material in the target.

Hope this helps.

Usually a combination of selection tools works better than any single one and after a while you do get a feel for which ones will work best with any particular situation.

I've only recently installed PSE4 and started playing with the magic selection brush tool. It works like the other selection tools in that once you have a selection you can just copy and paste as the others described. The problem I'm having with it though is that is that I haven't figured out how to use it in combination with the other selection tools. It does seem to have a mind of its own. Maybe someone who's used it more has got it figured out but so far I've found that working with the other selection tools that let you easily add or subtract from selections to fine-tune them is much more effective.
