I use an HP Scanjet 3970 Printer that is capable of scanning slides. I am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to scan any old black and white negatives into my computer with it? I use XP.

I assume you mean a scanner not a printer. I don't have this one but most scanners that have a transparent material adaptor should be able to handle black and white negatives unless they're too big for the adaptor. Even if you can't you can always try scanning as a positive and use the invert filter in PSE to do the negative to positive conversion.

Thank you Tony but the negatives are too big.

Hi Stringbean ...
What size are the negatives, how old are they and how many do you have to do ?
Sorry to ask so many questions :)

Take a look at this thread (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10849). It sounds like it can be done by just placing the negative on the scanner bed but will take some experimenting depending on your scanner.

Wendy - I have all kinds of negatives hanging around. The ones I am talking about are 1 3/4" X 1 3/4, also 3 ½ X 2 ½ . Black & white probably from the 1960's.

Hi Stringbean ...
Only reason I asked was in case they were very old glass ones. I would try Tony's method and see how that works ... another alternative is (if you have a lot) then see what it would cost to have then done professionally :)
