In PSE4, you can disable it by going to Organizer > Edit > Preferences > Camera or Card Reader and get rid of the check mark that says you want to use it.

Here is my problem---I do not want to use the organizer--but it automatically comes up.
The reason I do not want to use is, is because it collects all my images from the card and then a window pops up that says --it has encountered a problem and needs to close down.
After I close it--all my pics are somehow there---but not in a folder I want nor can I erase my card. I like to download to a chosen folder and then erase my card.
I just tried the above method. I went to Elements and hit the photo browser button---but got the same message about encountering a problem. I can not even get to the menu in organizer to shut it off.
I don't want to uninstall and start over--I have added so many custom things that I do not want to lose.
Can anybody help me with this one?

You might try this, it worked for me. Go to Start, Control Palel, Administrative Tools, Services (you may need to switch to Classic View before services appears.) In the list of services, look for Photoshop Elements Device Connect and Adobe Active File Monitor. Device Connect is usually the culpert as it runs in the background and searches for possible incoming photos for the Photo Downloader. Turn them off, in the list of services, just choose stop from the list of options. Then go Action-> Properties and choose Disable as your Startup type from the pull down menu in the dialog box that appears. If you change your mind later you can restart them.
Like I said this worked for me, hope it helps.
