I have Elements v4 , and am unable to download raw files from my canon EOS 350 D slr
I am running windows XP home edition and have downloaded the camera raw plugin v 3.2 from the canon website.
when I connect the camera to the computor the Adobe download window appears with the message "this device does not contain any supported media."
the plug in appears in the windows list of plug ins but only as the version type.

can anyone help please,

Welcome to the forums, Rocbob.

Instead of the Canon plug-in, try to update the camera raw module in Photoshop Elements :

Current version is 3.3

I use the Adobe Camera Raw plug in and it works very well. There are some limitations in PSE4 but they are not very significant.

If you do a camera raw from another program, save it as a TIFF so that you can work on it in Elements. Sometimes I do that if I want to have some of the broader features that are not presently available in PSE4.

If you go in Windows Explorer (the file explorer, not the internet browser) and locate your memory card (probably under the letter E: or F:), can you see some files in there?

If so, simply copy the CRW or CR2 files onto your computer (in a folder you'll remember), then open the files from there.

rocbob - I am new to this, but had a similar problem. Your problem may be the Canon plugin, which should not be needed if you have downloaded ACR. Go to your Program files to find the Canon plugin and delete it, then try loading your RAW images. There is a much better explanation, although focusing on Nikon cameras, at:

Hope this helps. jedgar

I too have this problem. I have downloaded Adobe Camera Raw 3.3 and followed the instructions. This made no difference to me seeing RAW files from my Canon EOS 20D and I get the same message as rocbob "this device does not contain any supported media." From the thread Carbone suggests going to File Explorer and looking there. When I look on the "drive" that is my camera there is nothing there, yet I can see the image on the camera's screen. If anyone has any clues or ideas please let me know, this is so frustrating! (How did rocbob get on?).

Many, many users have had trouble with RAW files when the camera is connected directly to the computer. Seems everyone has much better like with a simple media card reader. You guys might consider this simple and inexpensive solution. You can buy one for around 20 bucks and it really simplifies the transfer process.

Hi Rob ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

I'm with Norm on this one ... card reader are cheap and very easy to use. They make the whole process much simpler :)

Rob and Bob,
Did you install the Canon drivers? Are you using Windows XP? If not, there is an issue with the drivers, not working on any pre-XP OS.

Try going into your Camera Menu and select the Communications setting of PTP rather than Normal. This may resolve your problem.

You have all been exceptionally helpfull!

The results - card reader: works, I can see and load RAW files (Yea!). Setting the communication setting to "PTP" - I can now see and load RAW files straight from the camera!

Thank you all so much - what was an irritating but (to me) important issue is now resolved. Now I have to figure out what I can do with the images and in that I guess the fun starts! :)

Hi Rob ...

So pleased that you are now up and running ... and I am sure that you will have lots of fun editing images in Elements:)

Have you tried any of the tutorials yet?

I will be commencing to go through the tutorials. This looks like a goldmine of information and invaluable source of help. As I said before I am very grateful for the trouble people have taken in posting a response. :D

Not sure if you have solved the problem but I think had a similar issue

I have a Canon 20D and windows explorer treats it as a Camera not a hard disk as it does with newer EOS models. Plus if you have an old version of XP then explorer does not recognise RAW files and gives the error message you mentioned. I freaked when I first saw it as I thought I had lost the photos.

The solution i found was to apply a Microsoft patch to Explorer which allows it to recognise RAW files. But it didn't help me get the files off the camera - I had to use the Canon Organiser to do that and save from the camera to the hard disk. All very messy. The alternative could be to buy a USB card reader and grab the files in explorer and put them where you want them.

I do like the RAW files though
