I was admiring the gorgeous sketch of Nina with gradient background this morning. What method did you use? Just Beautiful as is the rest of your gallery.

Thank you both :)
For the photo of Niņa:
It's basically like the smudge technique.
Start out by bumping the brightness and saturation a bit then remove the color.
Create a duplicate of this layer, invert the colors, make it a color dodge layer and apply some gaussian blur to bring back the outline.
Then use the smudge tool to make the outline stand outmore. This is not really necessary. I don't always do this. Just depends on my mood and what I want to achieve in the end.
Once that is done, create a new layer and merge what you have so far into that layer.
Duplicate the merged layer and make it a soft light layer.
Now, create a dupe of your original color image and move it between the 2 layers. Use a Hue/Saturation layer (be sure to group it with your color layer so it only affects it)and increase the saturation a lot. Then reduce the opacity until you get a result you like.
You can experiment with opacities, blurs, saturation and even colorizing the colored layer all through this process. I have done several photos like this and it's never exactly the same. It is always fun though. :)
I hope this answered your question about the how and hope you enjoy trying this on some of your photos.

What beautiful little children! Their eyes are amazing.
I love all the amazing circle variations you've done, too. Great gallery!

That's a good question Dan. I hadn't thought about it. Have any suggestions?

I'm not sure on that one either ..
I do know that when you have made all of the items in an image (and its intended to look real) then thats a Photorealistic Painting.
If you do the same thing but instead of making the items you use clip art then thats a Photorealistic Montage.
... but I don't know what others are called ... I just call them my creations :) :)

I guess i will just call them creations - that's the label I used on them in my gallery. I like to think they are somewhat photorealistic :). I would never even think of using clip art or "borrowing" from anyone else's images.
I have always enjoyed drawing with pastels, ink and chalk. Elements and the Wacom tablet have just given me a new and very motivating medium to explore. I'm looking forward to creating many more creations :)

Thank you Wendy,
It's always nice to receive a compliment from someone with your creative talents :)
That image was a lot of fun to create and it started when I made a selction using rectangular and elliptical marquees. After making the selection, I noticed how much it looked like a hat, so I created a new image, did the selection, started adding high lights and shadows and then my imagination took over.

It's true? Every thing's BIG in Texas. Even the colors. Nice shots, I like em.

Thanks everyone.
Ya, pardner, Texas is the land of open skies 'n big land. Big Bend is a wonderful place if you go there in the spring. It's a long drive through the desert and not crowded when you get there. Lots of reptiles, wild hogs, deer, crows, even some mountain lions if your lucky enough to see one.

You're welcome Vesta. The two photos were done differently, so I will post the method I used for the second one (with the color gradiant background) shortly.

I created a tutorial for the image in my gallery per Vesta's request.
You can find it here. http://www.joewhitten.com/porcelaintutorial/porcelainnina.htm
Comments and critiques are welcome. This is the first tutorial I have done for the forum. Hope some of you find it helpful.
