View Full Version : Looking for an "effect" that gives photos a "ruffle border"

I had a free effect from the Adobe Elements subscriber's area from about a year ago that added a ruffled photo border circa a 1950's black and white snapshot print. I has disappeared and I NEED it! It was one of a series of PET effects that I think (maybe) Dave Cross wrote?!?

I would love to have it or a simliar one. Willing to pay $$$ for it even. Can anyone help?

I still have not figured out the specific article that you are looking for. Was it from Adobe or Photoshop Elements Techniques, Video or Tutorial??

Be that as it may, there should be a quick answer right in your Elements. I have Elements 3.0. If I go to Styles & Effects, then Effects and select Frames, there are several frames that look like what you are looking for.

If I recall, they came with Elements, and I did not have to download them as those PET Productivity or PET Effects files.

Check it out and post if you would like further suggestions.

The original PET effect was a free download when I was first on this website. I subscribed before the first issue was released and there were many free downloads here then. It was definetly in the PET family.

I don't see any frames similar to what I looking for in Elements itself. I have both Ver 3 and Ver 4 loaded. Neither of them have the frame. Perhaps you found it somewhere else. I have not "collected" frames on the web.

Look at the thread right below this one (for now) about creating a smudge stick effect. You will have to go back a way but tim vesper has posted a sketch that has a wavy border - perhaps similar to what you're looking for. I know several of my childhood pictures had this border around them. The details on how to create the border are included in the sketch tutorial.

Christine

Are you talking about the "aged photo effect"?

It gives a sort of torn/worn edge to a photo as well as adding some spots/marks.

I found it under effects>PET special effects

Sorry that the frames that I mentioned under Styles & Effects, Effects and then Frames were not the ones. They definitely came with Elements 3.0 that I purchased in the summer of 2005. I recently had to install an Elements 2.0, and similar frames were in the same spot with no extra downloading.

If you do not find this special frame, some suggested alternative frames: Aged Effect under PET Effects that Gary K. mentioned: Frame at the end of the Dave Cross tutorial entitled "Editing and creating the Vignette Effect" (Subscriber Section); Matt Kloskowski video entitled "Edge Effect" (Subscriber Section).

Good luck with your search.

Not exactly the border you need, but here's one style. What you want is pretty easy to do.

http://homepage.mac.com/xanthus1/painting/senior_by_George_Hardy.jpg

I created that painting and the edge around it in about 15 minutes. The edge takes roughly a minute or two to make.

1) Duplicate the image layer

2) Create a blank layer below it and fill that with a color - white in this case.

3) Switch to the top layer with the image.

4) Select the eraser tool and choose a Wet Media brush from the brush selector drop-down menu.

5) Begin clicking around the edge of the image, changing the opacity as needed.

While I hate to admit I remember many things from the '50s, I don't remember exactly what this frame looks like. If you had a picture you could post (www.pixentral.com is free), we might be able to figure out how to recreate it.

I think this is the effect.

That's called a Deckled Edge. Photoshop Elements Techniques, Vol. 2, number 5 teaches you how to make Deckled Edges.

There are also various tutorials on the net somewhere.

Here's a link to a Photoshop tutorial on creating torn and deckled edges. This will work in Elements as well.

I cheat ... :)

A while back I scanned an image that still had a good edging so I cropped out the centre and saved it ... now I just drag it onto an image and resize it :)

Wendy, what about those scissors that cut a design...aren't they cool ? I bought my daughter a couple from the dollar store so they are the cheap ones but they still work good. I know the craft stores have a better variety ...some of the designs are really really nice. I was thinking of doing some cuts like that and then just scanning them in...a total cheat way but who cares...it's the end result that counts ;)

Hi Jodi ...

I have some of the scissors and hadn't thought of trying that :)
