Ok, I've turned off the auto setting on my camera and have some new images in my gallery, the first 5 are my attempts at learning the settings. Any hints as to what is wrong, what could be better etc etc would be greatly appreciated:)

Thanks!

Gee Tami,

We should all do so well with manual settings. The second photo looks like you had some trick lighting - harsh light surrounded by shade. In that situation you have to be cognizant and try to adjust your settings somewhere in the middle of those ranges. I would have probably stepped down a stop or two to avoid the wash out and then worked on the shadows in Elements. But that's just me :)

I keep m D70 set on aperature priority about 90% ofthe time and go to manual when I see a tricky shot.

Your photos are really greta though. Maybe you shold be coaching the rest of us :)

Thanks Carol I love the colors in the Birds, so vivid :)

I see what you mean about the washout, I took like 10 different shots and the one I posted was the best of the lot, heck a couple of them were completely black..not sure what I did there! One of my objectives while playing that day was to one learn different settings for different conditions and two to *try* and take images that I didn't need to *fix* in an image program. I'll keep working on it thanks for teh comments!

Tami,

What great shots. Can I ask what sort of camera you used?

Tami,

I shoot my 20d in AP mode most of the time. Haven't yet had the nerve to go full manual. For those tough lighting conditions......try shooting from another vantage point. I've found (at times) better composures then what first caught my eye by trying different angles.
My goal too was to shoot pics that need NO adjustments. I've found the more you know about PE, the easier it is to find something that you will want to tweek. Nice shots by the way. Keep working at it. You (we) will never know it all traveling this road to the PERFECT PICTURE

I love the water one. What settings did you use? What camera are you using?

Sherrie,

Sorry it took so long to answer but the images were on my home system, here's the info:)

Nikon D50 iso 200 1/1000 F/8 using a 70-300mm @ 300mm Nikon telephoto lense.

I took it kneeling with a slight downward angle, Hubby thought I was nuts..kneeling in the sand with the camera that close to the rushing water....silly man :)

Tami,
Your shots are great. As to the surf shot, I did that on Lake Superior last summer. They are in the Gallery. I have had a D50 for 6 months and love it. Try using apeture priority too, it's easy. You don't have to do much but focus and shoot.:)

Eva,

Thanks, I'll try apeture priority maybe that way I can get good shots without taking 10 of each at different settings and then trashing 9 of them later... I love the effect on your shots from Lake Superior, also love your pencil sketch look of your pup:) Once I get this shooting thing figured out I need to start doing creative things with the shots!
