Hi,
this was done following the new video - Border Effects.
At first I couldn't get it to work properly but a little patience gave me this.
As anyone else tried it?
Kev.

Kev,
Took me a couple of time too to get the clicks down and the right brush to give the effects I wanted but it is working for me now. Nice job on the dolphin!

Nancy,
it was the same for me, thought I had the right brush but I was soooo wrong.

Kev,
I like the dolphin very much. In my opinion there is always beauty in simplicity.
I've watched the new video, but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks.

Thank you,
I tried this effect on your photo of the children and it was very effective. you must try it.

I really like your image Kev, the effect worked out great.
I also tried to do this video tut and everything went great until I came to the part where I was supposed to add a drop shadow........this part didn't work for me :( I clicked on the drop shadow but it did nothing to the picture. I checked to see if I was on the right layer and I was, so I don't know where I went wrong :o
Anyway I left it to do later in the hope that someone could give me some advice :)

Mel,
Did you apply the drop shadow effect to both the top picture layer and the black layer that the picture layer is grouped with?

Kev,
Yours looks terrific! I tried this out and didn't like mine as well. I'm still working on this effect. Here are my first attempts:

Mel,
Did you apply the drop shadow effect to both the top picture layer and the black layer that the picture layer is grouped with?
No I think I only applied it to one layer. Is that where I went wrong?
kayser
February 18th, 2006, 09:59 AM
Yep, I think that's what he said in the video. Try it and see how it goes.

Kay
She looks adorable - like she is having soooo much fun! Great images. I didn't like the straight edge across the top and bottom in the tut so I messed around with brushes until I got one that gave the same effect on all four sides. I liked that better.

Thanks for that Kay, I'll have to try it again.
Wendy
February 18th, 2006, 10:11 AM
Hi Mel ...
The drop shadow needs to go on the black layer ... I think that in the Video he applies it to the picture layer by error and then applies it to the black layer to let the shadow show.
Because you have masked the edges using the black layer as a mask then a drop shadow on the top layer wouldn't show up :)

Thanks for straightening that out, Wendy, I didn't catch that it was a mistake, and I thought it was strange to do both. Anyway, applying it to the black layer worked :)

That looks good ... I think one of the secrets is to make your bush large enough so that the roughed up edge is noticable.
Your works well with that dark background :)

Wendy,
That's really pretty! I like the edge you chose. It looks like a note card with the torn edges like you find in fine card shops.
Wendy
February 18th, 2006, 08:05 PM
I just used one of the thick heavy brushes ... but I changed the angle to do the top and bottom and made the brush very big ..
I tried applying a drop shadow on it but with the image being very dark the drop shadow didn't show at all so I put a white edge behind it instead and did the drop shadow on that :)

I'm really enjoying seeing everyone's efforts with this. It's kind of a challenging one -- with all the steps. Here's my first try. These swans were carved, and sat up in a high niche is a friend's house. I thought they were really pretty.

Thanks, Nancy. I used filter>brush strokes>crosshatch, and then filter>artistic>poster edges -- keeping both of them fairly low -- to create the look of the swans.

Wendy
Wendy, when you say you changed the angle......I assume you didn't use the eraser (where there is no option as far as I can see to do this). Did you paint on a mask with a brush, and so was able to change the angle, rather than use the eraser on the black layer grouped below (as in the tutorial)??
Wendy
February 19th, 2006, 04:46 AM
Hi Robin ...
Rather than use the eraser I did indeed use a paintbrush on a mask then I put a mask on the photograph layer, selected the "black areas" on the layer mask using Conntrol Click, and then filled the selection in the new mask ... I do tend to do my own thing
Its easier in Photoshop as you can duplicate a mask and add it to another layer just by holding down the Alt key and dragging the mask ... but this doesn't work in Elements:)
EDIT ... I just realised that if you use a mask then you don't actually need the black layer

Its nice to see everyone giving the technique their own little twist ... I like that :)

Robyn, that effect works wonderfully with your rose picture. What a beautiful rose! I like how the ragged border edge echoes the ragged edge of the rose petals and the "fuzzy" stem.

Thank you Linda. I think the ragged edge echo was more by accident than design! Don't ask me what it is, but I know it's not a rose. I took heaps of flower photos at a Conservatory in one of our local parks..............I'm not a gardener. Is it a begonia???

41 years! Wow! I hope you do get roses. I'm coming up on 37 years, so you have me beat. I often think I've been married a long time, but the other evening I was chatting with two other couples -- one had been married for 57 years, and the other couple for 54! I felt like a "baby!"

The photo in your gallery with Albuquerque at the top. The photo inside the circle looks as if it was taken on top of the mountain that you have to take a tram to the top. I forget it's name. Hey, Larry. You are so right. Although there is also a road to the top of Sandia -- but the road starts on the backside (east side) of the mountain.
How wonderful! You'll be coming to the balloon fiesta! I will never get tired of seeing that -- especially the "mass assension", when around 800 balloons lift off withing an hour or so. It's awesome. Also, don't miss one of the balloon glows at night.
