Hello! I am just in the midst of a class on Photoshop Elements 4.0, and I have the program loaded on my desktop. I now want to also load it on my laptop, but I keep getting this error: "The system cannot read from the specified device." Did anyone have this problem? What am I missing. It loads the program, asks me some questions about what language I want to use, whether I want to accept the terms of the agreement and then gives me that Windows Installer error. Can anyone help?

Hello and welcome to the Forums!
Are you installing it from a network drive?

Let's see. The two computers are on a network, but I don't know if the laptop would be considered a network drive. Does that help?

I am not a Windows network expert, but it's like the network is not fully accessible. Are you trying to install with the CD inserted in your computer locally or the other one?

I have the disk in the external disk drive of the laptop computer. But now I see what you are asking. I could not install software from my desktop to my laptop. They are not networked that way.
Do you think it has some write protect on the disk that I can only install it once?

No, not that I know of.
Else, let's try the usual : Disable any anti-spyware, virus, malware you may have. Make sure no other software is running (i.e. music player, pop up blocker, chat, etc..) See if this helps.
(crossing fingers!) :)

Have you tried installing anything else from this drive? Perhaps your external drive has gone bad or is not plugged in properly. Ironically - I have an external floppy for my laptop and the program that uses it will not recognize it if it has a disk in it when the program opens. The drive has to be empty. Odd but can't seem to find a fix for it. Works fine if I play by it's rules though.

I seem to remember having that problems with some kind of software. It would not load form the internal drive of the Dell laptop. I ended up loading it from an extrnal USB CDRW drive. I can't remember what the software was.
