View Full Version : Deleting from card/storage device... embarassing really

I have had PE 4 for nearly three weeks now. When I downloaded photos from my card/storage device, having saved them to my hard drive in PE 3 got a little message asking if I wanted to delete from the card/storage device reader. Until I installed PE 4 I thought it was a little silly sometimes in case I lost photos, which I did ONCE (no great loss, but there you go), but now cos PE 4 flatly refuses to do so I am finding it rather annoying that I have to leave PE and dump the photos in a rather long winded manner, especially when I use my 40 GB storage device, at least with my card I can just delete all via the camera.
WHAT do I have to do to get PE to ask me if I want to 'clean' my card/storage device? I have tried resetting to default but that worked once with the card only. Now it still sits looking at me and does nothing.
As I say it is rather embarrassing having to ask such a silly question but I have tried most things I can think off and with the vast knowledge on here I am hoping someone can point out the route of my idiocy.

Hmmm? It's strange because I see know option in preferences to turn this feature off either. Hamlet, this is a long shot, but format the card and try the "Reset all Warning Dialogs" on the General page of Preferences.

Wow! I'm having practically the same problem. When I download the pictures from my card reader, it then asks me if I want to delete from the card and I answer yes. It looks like it's deleting but it actually doesn't and I have to put the card in my camera and delete from there.

Hi...

Well the post from Norma just shows that there are no silly questions here...
Try what Norm suggested... also I'd recommend resetting the Preferences file. This is the first troubleshooting step when PSE doesn't behave how it should.
To do this you need to start PSE in Editor, but straightaway hold down the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys together. Keep holding these keys until a windows comes up asking if you want to delete Settings, select Yes.
Let us know how you get on...
For what it's worth, I would say it's best practice to delete images from the card reader in the camera...

In addition to this. It is recommended to use your camera to format the memory card. So I usually move all my pics and then format once the move is completed.

Well the first day i got my new camera i read the manual front to back. It said 'always' delete images from card in the camera and not have computer do it...same with formatting. So, needless to say I follow the directions...so I can be a happy camera user :)

Yeah, I'm going to continue deleting in the camera. It's fast and easy and I've now gotten in the habit.

I've also read it's best to delete in camera. There are times when a down load glitch can happen and if you've deleted them from your card reader then you have lost them for good. I usually try to put them on computer, burn to cd and THEN delete from camera. It's the safest method. :)

I used to delete from the computer until I started seeing "ghost" images on my card. The computer showed they were deleted but when I would review in my camera, every once in a while an old picture would suddenly appear. I had to format the card to make them go away. Now I do all my deletion in the camera and the ghosts have stopped popping in.

I know that I should delete in my camera ... I know all the advantages of doing it that way ...
But I just keep on deleting using the computer ... I think its just habit ( a bad one ) :o :o

Well I have tried what everyone suggested and it seems to work with my card, but still my downlaoding device flatly refuses to do as it is told well I shall keep trying.
As everyone is so helpful, can anyone suggest the best way of attaching a number plate to a caravan without drilling........ sorry wrong forum.......

Great question!
I download with via the card reader to the hard drive, *** make a backup to another hard drive, DVD or CD-ROM *** and then I format the card in the camera.
This reduces card headaches, for me anyways, in terms of file numbering, switching cards, cameras, etc.
I also don't download with Organizer. I only put pics in Organizer after I've done an initial pass of my shots to weed out the ones I don't want to see again.
