What would I do without you guys? I am just fooling around again. I just took this photo of some tulips my valentine gave me and I made a selection (not very good but just to get different effects. What I want to know is:
you see the area between the stems that is a different colour. How do I make a selection within a selection - or how would I paint that area black between the stems. These are things that come up that I don't have a clue about and it is so nice to be able to post and get comments. I hope others learn from my questions the way I learn from following other threads.
Thanks again.

Hi Shari

I like that picture… very surreal, impressionistic.

In your selection option bar depending on which one you are using you have icons of little boxes. When using the lassoes and marquees, you have four I think. When the first is clicked each time you use the lasso you make a new selection
When the second is pressed you add a new selection to the old so you can select different parts of the image at the same time.
When the third is pressed you subtract one selection from an existing one. Say you have a large square marquee already active. When you draw a second inside you subtract that area from the first.
The fourth ,which I seldom use, combines selections where they cross.

When using the selection brush you only have two icon boxes. The first is new selection and the second is to add to selections.

So the answer is yes you can make more than one selection at a time and cut out the black as well as the flower at the same time.

Again thanks Butch. Another question while I am at it. If I were to work on that photo - because I like the effect too and if I were to print to use as note cards - would the black background take a lot of ink. Usually when I made cards the background is white. I have an hp photo printer and the large cartridge for the color ink. Just wondering..

I wouldn't let that hold you back... I print a lot of black in my photos.... what’s $38 bucks for a black cartridge anyway. :D

Why wouldn't you use clone?

Hi Jan ...

Ithink, in this case, that Shari has cut out the images totally and the black is the background layer. She could indeed use the clone tool to clone black into gaps between the stems but in this case its probably neater to remove the excess by selecting it and then deleting ...

One reason is that if she later decided to change the background colour or move the flowers onto a different background then any cloning she had done between the stems would show.

Wendy,

Thanks for explaining that.

Jan - I actually tried to clone and it did not work. I thought maybe I was on the wrong layer or maybe you could not clone from the background layer I made. Some of my work right now is trial by error.

Wendy - the reason it looks like a painting is because I did it as a watercolor and used gradient till I got what I liked.

I think later when I get time I will start from scratch again and try to do it properly.

Hi Shari ...

Thanks for letting me know how you did it :)

By the way when you tried to clone and it would not work ... did you have the clone tool set to "Use all layers" ?
