 Why can I enter a Date and Time in Adobe Photoshop Album Started Edition for my scanned in 35mm negatives and it shows in Date Picture Taken in Window Explorier XP (just like I want).
 But, in Elements 4.0 it does not do that.
Album also adds it to EXIF:DateTime Orginal and EXIF:DateTime Digitized.
If need I can explain futher.

Hi there ...

Mike usually pick up the PSE4 Organiser queries but he is busy this week ... but hopefully he will pick up on the thread when he is next here.

You can do it from the Organizer but it's not automatic. Organizer should show the date below the image if you check the details box at the bottom. You can change it if you want by clicking on the date (you'll get a dialogue box with different options). If you go File>Write Tag Info to Files if will write the date into the EXIF field that Windows Explorer shows as Date Picture Taken.

PS This works in PSE3 - not sure if PSE4 works the same. Try it and let us know if it does.

Tony,
It does not seem to be working in PSE 4.
There are multiple people (including I think the originator of this thread) complaining over on the forum on the Adobe site that it does not work in v4. One person did a comparison of PSE 3 and PSE 4 saying it worked for him in 3 but not in 4. I suggested that people with this problem file a Bug Report.

Here is a quote from the PSE 4 Help. So it should work.
"You can change the date and time in the file information of your
photo, video, or audio file. For instance, you can change the date and
time that your digital camera records for a photo. You might need to
do this if your camera's clock is set incorrectly. People often change
the date of scanned photos because it reflects the date the photo was
scanned rather than originally taken."
My conclusion is that there is no relationship between Write Tags to Files and the updating of the date taken fields. Did you find any specific information to say that there is?

Barb: I found the Write Tag Info to Files by playing around. I found out how to change the date in Organizer (PSE3) but was surprised that it didn't show up in the EXIF data. I'd previously found that the keyword Metadata in the JPEG file doesn't get updated with Tags unless you use the Write Tag Info function so thought I'd see if it also updated the date and it seemed to work. Only did it once so can't guarantee that it always works that way.
All this is for PSE3 although the PSE3 Help reads identical to the PSE4 help you quoted.
I'll have to slip over to the other forum and see what's going on ;)

That's really wierd. I found a jpeg that had no Date Picture Taken in Explorer, selected it in Organizer, hit that Write Tag info button and the date did indeed appear in Explorer. Then I tried another one and it didn't worked. Very strange. I then tried clicking on the Organizer date and hitting OK OK without changing it and the Date Taken appeared in Explorer. Very buggy - even in PSE3 and it sounds like PSE4 may be worse :(

Tony,
In PSE 3, my results were that using a digital camera photo, in the Organizer modifying the date/time and setting the time to a specific value, then checking Windows Explorer - its Date Photo Taken field had the new value.
My PSE 4 results for the same sequence were that the Windows Explorer Date Taken field did NOT have the new value. However, if I opened that file in the PSE 4 Editor and did File Info, it did show me the new time value.
When I looked at scanned photos, I am not seeing any values in the Windows Explorer Date Photo Taken field. The Organizer shows the date that I entered via the Modify date/time function and so does the PSE Editor command File Info - under Camera data "Date Time".
For the scanned photos, my preliminary observation is this seems to be the same in PSE 3 and PSE 4.
So it might be that the Organizer is (at least in some cases) updating a field different than what Windows Explorer is referencing as "Date Photo Taken".
The potential impact that I see here is problems when using these photo files in other programs.

PS I did not use Write Tags to Files for these scenarios in either release because I don't use that function. I know that in PSE3 there were times where the program did a write tags outside my control. Writing of tags to the original and the _edited as the result of an edit was one where I got burned. I have not yet checked this aspect in PSE 4.

Barb: That's pretty much my experience with PSE3 too. I just scanned in an image into the editor and saved as a jpeg. I used Exifer and there is EXIF data saved with the image but only in the Date Modified Field - not the Date Picture Taken field. Opening the date dialogue box in organizer and OK OK writes the date into the Date Picture Taken field. Write Tag Info to files also works but not consistently - no idea why.
