View Full Version : Best quality CD/DVDs?

I frequently hear it discussed that one should only use high quality CD/DVD for image storage. Unfortunately, it seems that no specific brands are mentioned, other than the occasional comment that "discount electronic stores" are not the best place to buy them.

Advice?

Hi,

I'm currently using Memorex cds and Philips dvds, both brands are performing well. I did use Verbatim at one point but I had more failures using these than with any other brand.

Just my experience...

So far, so good. You have to know, most of what I do is give disks. I use very few for my own usage. So, sorry if it sounds cheap, but at 50 disk a month, if I can save a few $$$, then it's ok :)

Oh well then sure go right ahead...as long as you aren't putting any priceless images on them for storage then be my guest....share them :)

I will agree with Verbatim.
More layers or something.

Thanks! I've used Maxell in the past but I believe we currently have Memorex (what we've bought at SAM's.)

I'll be looking around for new CDs!

Hello there

If you really want the best quality burn take the time to check your burners help or support website. You will find that all burners have certain disks that are tested and optimized for use with that particular burner.

My Plextor is optimized for Taiyo Yuden for instance.

Here is a good online site to buy disks from if you like.

Good luck Butch

The CDs I give are usually only for temporary usage.. nothing permanent. Else, they do get a better quality disc :)

Jodi,

It sounds like he's backtracking? Didn't he just send you something the other day. If it's a CD, make sure to check out the brand...:)

This thread got me looking around the Internet and I found this interesting site:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Sounds like Brand Name is meaningless since most outsource to a few manufacturers and the only real way to tell who really made it is to get a utility that reads the Media ID on the disc.

That being said I usually get whatever happens to be on sale at the time :)

Here is another forum with all the information you could ever want including free software like DVD identifier. There is particular information on your burner, and disk manufacturers.

I have gotten myself into quite a pickle using staples brand, and have had some trouble with verbatim. My experience comes from using Premiere Elements. The staples brand wouldn't burn at all, and the verbatim brand burn would only work in some DVD players. Which causes stress when some clients would call to say their DVD doesn't work, and other clients did not have a problem. Terrible inconsistency. I see the best performance with Memorex and Phillips. Using these two brands, and no longer get those complaints.

For Data storage I use memorex DVD+R.

I have been using TDK, Fujii, and Verbatim CD-R's and Fuji DVD+R. All have been great and very stable over the years. Use Fuji CD's and DVD+R's in our Lab, no complaints from customers over past 3 years.:)

I like Maxell and Fuji but the only discs I've actually had a problem with are Staples.

Perhaps I missed it, but I don't think anyone identified the type (e.g., +R, -R, +RW, -RW) when discussing the best quality DVDs. Maybe everyone is using burn-once-read-many-times DVDs.

Anyway, my reason for posting on this forum doesn't have anything to do with saving pictures created using Photoshop. My intent is to learn the best quality DVD+RW disks to use on my RCA DVD recorder.

My recorder seems to work fine and produces excellent off-air video and, when all goes well, excellent video from recordings. In the six months I've owed the recorder, I've had very poor results from Fujifilm DVD+RW disks and fair to poor results with Memorex DVD+RW disks. I've recently started using Maxell DVD+RW disks, which are the most expensive of the disks I've used and have given the best performance thus far. By best performance, I mean the reproduced picture quality is excellent, and they haven't failed yet. By failed, I mean they havent' caused freezing, pixelation, or other mischief.
