Hi -newbie here. This is my first post.:) My son recently gave me Elements 4.A lot of posts here give a pdf file to d/l. Shows how clueless I am, what does pdf stand for, & how do I open this type of file ? I have XP SP2.

PDF is Adobe's Portable Document Format and was developed to have a common way to send and open files across networks and computer platforms. They may contain text, photos or both. You can open them either with elements 4 or by downloading a free reader from Adobe.

You will also see PSD files a lot in these forums about Elements. This is a photo format, again developed by Adobe, that allows you to edit your photos using layers and saving these layers for future editing. These can be opened with Elements.

Please post back as you start working with Elements and you'll find a lot of helpful people here willing to give you tips and guidance.

Hi storm ...

and welcome to the forum :)

A pdf file is a Portable Document Format you usually view it with Adobe Acrobat ... I'm really not sure what you mean by "A lot of posts here give a pdf file to d/l"

... and just wondering if you mean psd (which is a file in Photoshop format)

Hi Storm

Welcome to the forums. This is a great place to learn Elements.

What kind of things are you thinking about doing?

Thank you both Ward & Wendy for your help, & also your welcome. I have it sorted out now . Sorry Wendy perhaps I used the wrong terminoligy. in the Links Forum there is a post- Creating a Collage or Montage Tutorial-a link is given www.ocdsb.ca......./PSCollage.pdf . This is what I meant. Sorry:)

Right terminology :) . From the shortened link you posted my guess is someone had a photo or even a tutorial in .PDF format to view.

While it is a very common format, we don't seem to use it around here to often. Likely because the reader for it is free, but the creator/writer for it is not. :D

(Thrifty bunch around here) :)

Thanks for your Welcome Gary. I have lurked here for a couple of weeks now . This seems a very friendly & helpful site .
What am I thinking about doing- - well I have wished for a long time I could do a decent Collage for my daughter & my son . One is into Horses the other into sailing. I envy all the Talent that I see on these Forums, it is awesome.

Now that you are not lurking. Start asking questions :D

Lots of very talented collage people around, I've still yet to try my hand at it.

Check out the galleries and you can get loads of ideas from there.

Gary: I seem to remember seeing recently that Open Office (which of course comes free) will write pdf files. So maybe us thrifty types can get into the pdf business - of course you can always type into Elements and save as a pdf - very secure as it comes out as an image so you'd need to Photoshop it to change the words :) .

Tony

I haven't played with OO for a while. I may have even uninstalled it.

I never think of using elements for PDFs. Mind you writing a tut with it would be tricky. :D

Hi Storm ...

Elements can seem confusing to begin with ... but it doesn't take to long to learn how to use it. The best way is to try out a few tutorials ... and of course ask lots of questions :)
