Hi everyone,
The sample point for my clone stamp tool used to follow me around as I worked. Now it remains stationary like the healing brush. Any ideas on why this may be happening?
Thanks.

At the top, option bar, I think there's an option for the sampling to move along with the selected area or to be fixed...
(I'm at work, I can't check it.. sorry..)

The Aligned option means that that the sample point either moves when you start a new stroke or goes back to the original one. But in either case the sample point should move during the stroke. If yours isn't moving at all then there's something wrong I would think - try a reset of the tool.

That's good news Norm. You must have been working it too hard :D - it just needed a rest....

Tony,
Yes, I've been touching up some very old photos and I've clicked about a bazillion times over the last few days. I didn't actually know how to "reset" the tool but your suggestion got me hunting around.
Thank you again.

Norm...
I have found that when you use the clone tool and do a lot of sampling it sometimes packs up ... maybe it things its being overworked :)

There is a little box that says ALIGN if it is checked it acts in one way and if it is not checked it picks from different place so play with it. It is up top about right of middle of the top of hte page. Find that and you will solve your problem. Hitting reset does not let you play by toggling it off and one. I think Align follows you and the unchecked keeps going back to the original placed you picked from.

Hi Sandie,
Thank you. A simple reset of the clone tool solved my problem. As it was, the sample point was remaining in one spot regardless of whether the align box was checked or not. I guess I overworked the tool.
Thanks again and thanks to everyone else for your suggestions.

I'm late in responding to this, but I just read something in Barbara Brundage's Missing Manual, where she says "the clone tool is a great resource, but it definitely has a mind of its own sometimes." She basically offered the same suggestions offered here re the aligned box and then, resetting the tools, and then, if all else fails, deleting Element's preferences file (CTRL ALT SHIFT) Anyway, I know your problem is solved, but it is interesting to note that it isn't an unusual occurrence.
