View Full Version : cutting out a heart?

This surely must be very simple, but I can't seem to do it. I don't want the heart the cookie cutter extracts from the plain background I'm using.......I want the reverse..........the plain square background with the heart shaped hole cut out of it. ???

Hi Robyn ...
Use the heart in the custom shapes
and drag it to the size you want
then Control Click on the layer thumbnail to get the selection
stay in the layers palette and switch off the custom shape layer eyeball
then click on the layer you want to make the cut out in
Select>Inverse
Edit>Delete
You can then discard the custom shape layer

Hi Robyn ...
I just realised that I did a mini tut that used this technique :). Its in Wendy's Mini Tutorials (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3641) under Making a Valentine's Card ...

Wendy,
I realised that too AFTER I had gone to bed last night!
Gary,
The cookie cutter has a heart shape too, but the reverse to what I wanted.

My first high school sweetheart cut my heart out. Perhaps she should do it for you!

Correction, I usually buy a card, not "but" it... I guess the fingers had a life of their own on that one.
I ususally buy a card, but you inspired me Wendy. Making one demonstrates much more commitment... I'm in.

I started this thread...............
Don't you just love it when it evolves and assumes a life of its own somewhere along the way!:D

:D Robyn you just never know where a thread will lead you! Only once in the year that I've been on here did someone get upset because his thread had gone astray. He didn't like getting notifications that that didn't concern his question (which had been answered). It seems that some times our minds just wander. (must be a senior thing............although I'm only a senior in title here.)

I think it's great Pauline, you never know where it's going to lead.
Don't remind me of the senior thing though..........(it's 60 in a couple of months)...........but I rather fancy having a birthday than the alternative of not being around to have one!
