I can find plenty of information on layers on this site but I still don’t understand how to save my work. What if I want to shut down my computer and work on a project later, do I somehow save each layer or are all the layers there when I return? I see that layers are the answer to many problems but I’m having a hard time understanding them. I understand the concept but not the actual using. So frustrating!!

Hi Stringbean ...

You don't need to save each layer individually what you do is:

File>Save As
Then make sure that you have the image set to save as "Photoshop"
that saves the file as a psd and all the layers are there next time you open it :)

Stringbean,

When you open a file into elements, it is opening into memory, and as such, really has no file type. It is when you save it that it becomes a file type. To save layers in tact, you have to save as either a .psd file or a .tif file. These are larger than .jpg, but the will preserve your layers. The next time you want to work on the picture, you open the .tif or .psd, not the .jpg. (If you are using Organizer, choose "Save with version set" to keep your pictures together.)

Choose File->Save as, and then in one of the drop-down lists it will have "PSD, TIFF, JPEG, JPEG200" etc. Choose either PSD or TIFF.

One note, make sure your screen resolution is 1024 x 768. Serveral weird problems show up with Save As if your screen resolution is not this size.
