View Full Version : Inner Shadow question

I have PSE 3.0. I want to apply an inner shadow to an entire photograph, so all four sides have the shadow visible. When I add the shadow, it is only visible on two sides (I know I can click the little "f" in the layers palate and get to the Style Settings to change the shadow angle). My problem is getting the other two sides to have the shadow also. I try adding a new layer, but when I add the inner shadow to that layer, changing the shadow direction changes the direction in the first layer. I'm sure there is a simple answer to this but I haven't found it doing a search here in the forums, and my trials and errors have not brought me any closer. Maybe I should walk away and come back later.
Thanks for any help you can give me! Cathy

Also, I tried selecting the entire photo, then do the "Stroke Outline Selection" but that didn't achieve the shadow I was really going for.

Hi there
I'm sure there is a better way but I do this
Duplicate the background layer.
Fill the background layer with solid black
Click on the duplicate layer, make a selection out as far as you want, Feather it 20 pix or so then invert then press delete.
The feathered black background shows thru

Here is another technique.
Copy the background layer
Click on the copy, use the marquee and make a selection the width of the area you want shaded. Inverse Then press delete.
Then copy this layer, go back to the layer you just copied...the second one from the top. Ctrl click to make the selection active then fill with any color you want.
Now be sure to do this...Select>Deselect then Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. As you move the slide look at your pic for the effect you want.

One looks darker than the other here, but individually they look all right. At least you can get the idea why I was trying to do this. Thanks again Butch!
