Hi,
This was done to show how life styles have changed.
I've no idea when the BW was taken but I repaired a small tear and then added the coloured one using Grant's mask tool.

Kev, that is brilliant. I am sure someone with the knowledge on how to date photos by clothing will be able to give us some idea when the original B&W was taken.

Karen,
Pleased you like it.
As an wrinkly I remember playing in the street like these kiddies but we were not as dirty and unkempt as they look!

Kev:)

Wendy,
Sorry no idea, it's a photo that a relative has but he can't remember where he got it from.

Kev,
Nicely done. Judging by the clothing and comparing it to some I have from my genealogy days it appears to be mid to late 1940's. I have one with my mother wearing a very similar coat to the girl leaning over. My mother was born in 1935 and would have been 8 (the age her photo was taken) in 1943. The little girls wearing knee-hi socks with the shorter dresses also seems to suggest 40's or perhaps even early 50's. The pictures I have of my grandmother in the 30's shows the dresses were longer-below knee - and the boys wore the tights under their shorts. I'm definitely not an expert but have dated photos that can give some clues.

Nancy,
thanks for the info and detective work.
I thought about 1940 but had no real idea.

Hi Kev ...

My guess would also be in the 1940's ... or very early 50's.

They are actually quite well dressed ... but something about the photo makes me think that it doesn't look English.

Very cool Kev. There may be a big difference between the style of dress and the sophistication of the toys but one thing remains constant; kids smile and laugh as they play. Beautiful!!

Hello,
thanks to all.
As I said i've no idea where the photo comes from.
I agree with Wendy that it doesn't seem British.

Kev,
Nice one. It looks like any large city of that era.

Hi Kev ...

On the Wall there is a sign ... I think it may say Cafe then I can't read the rest.

Can you read it on the original ... I'm wondering if the photo is French

Wendy,
I magnified the original and though it's very blurred it looks like Cafe de Ciel. Now with my limited schoolboy French that could mean sky cafe.
But it could mean the photo was taken in France.

All those berets on the children - must be France.

Hi Triumphant,
Now, why didn't I spot that?

Kev ..

Only trouble is that Berets were quite fashionable in the UK from about 1948 to the mid 50's ...

Also here in US - I have pic of my grandfather wearing one as well as my great-grandparents. Seemed to lose fashion in the 50's though.
