View Full Version : PSE4: importing from camera as JPG

All,
I have recently installed PSE4 and perhaps ill-advisedly ticked the option to make it the default programme for viewing jpeg files during install. I used to import photos from my canon camera uising the basic but effective zoombrowser software it came with. Now, PSE4 insists on being the import route, and zoombrowser won't work. This is no major problem except that it insists on importing my 1Mb photos as 5Mb TIFFs. Can anyone point me at the place I tell it to import the files as they are and not as Tiffs?
Woud be much appreciated.
Thanks
Nick

Hi Nick,
Welcome to the forums...:)
PSE4 insists on being the import route, and zoombrowser won't work. You can turn the PSE photo downloader off in the Organizer Preferences, go to Edit > Preferences > Camera or Card Reader and uncheck the "Use Adobe Photo Downloader..." box.
it insists on importing my 1Mb photos as 5Mb TIFFs. Can anyone point me at the place I tell it to import the files as they are and not as Tiffs? This is puzzling... so you take the pictures in JPEG but PSE4 converts them to TIFFs when you just import them using the PSE Photo Downloader? All the Photo Downloader does is import the pictures... unless you check the "Automatically Fix Red Eye" option.
What camera do you have?

It does exactly that. Could be that using the auto fix red eye function is doing it. My camera is a canon ixus 300 2Mpixel, so you can imagine my surprise at finding my files are now 5Mb.....
Do you think its worth turning off the red eye and seeing what happens? I can find no option anywhere in the program to change the import file type.

Nick,
There aren't any options because the Photodown loader should just import the photos - not change the format (Process Multiple Files does this job).
I have imported files with the auto red eye on and off but it hasn't affected the file format. Try it though...

Mike,
I tried but it makes no difference. PSE has already turned the files into Tiffs before it stores them on the HDD. In the first screen where you select the files from the camera, I can select all the files - they are shown as jpegs. Once I hit acquire, it says various things, among which is "decompressing jpeg", and when I go to the next screen where you choose where to store the files, they are all shown as imagexxx.tiff. Is this the screen where I can get it to convert back to jpg when saving, or do I have a problem?

Nick,
There is a problem here... I just can't figure out what is causing it  :o . As I've said, the Adobe Photo downloader should just bring the files in.
I'm working on this... sorry not to have come up with an answer yet. I'll post anything I come across.

Many thanks. I can't work it out either. The only thing I can think of is to import them as tiffs, save as jpg again and delete the tiffs. Seems a bit over the top though. I don't know if a camera driver update would help, maybe there's something in the way the Downloader is reading the camera information....
BTW I downloaded the updated canon import software from their website and it works, so I can now import using that software and import into PSE from the HDD. It works, but I'd still like to have only the one photo system.....

Mike,
I am wondering if a twain driver is being used for the import from his camera and if that makes a difference?
My family has several Canon Powershots. However, I always use a card reader to import the jpegs so I don't have a direct comparison.

Just wondering don't some cameras have an option for a Jpeg preview to go along with the tiff or raw files.
Perhaps you have that option turned on.

Nick,
Just for testing purposes, connect your camera and look at the files using XP. Go to Start >My Computer and turn on your camera. You should see it under Scanners and Cameras. Right click on the camera icon and click >Explore. What file type do you see? If it is Jpegs, copy any one of them to your desktop. Is it still a Jpeg or has it now changed to Tiff?
