I'm taking a web design coding class and I have to have my png files in a .png8 format only. What's the difference, and how can I get one?

My png file looks great in my browser, however I understand that a regular .png does not transfer well to other browsers. What's wrong with the png files I have in my Photoshop Elements 3 program. I've been designing in PSE3 for a long time now and I have some great files that I want to use on the my web page designs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

png supports 24 bit color(similar to jpeg) while png 8 supports 8 bit color ( similar to gif but more compression but does not support animation). Older browsers may not recognize png format...which is still a relatively new format. You can use the 'save for web' option in Elements File menu to save files as png8.
