I have researched this extensively this morning and what I have read recommends that if you are doing any type of editing, graphics, etc then a CRT monitor is what you should buy. One that was recommended is the LaCie 19" CRT. I found two stores that carry them but they run about $700.00. Ouch!!!
Do any of you have a CRT monitor? If so, what kind or can you make any type of recommendation?

In the perfect world I would have the Lacie as well...been wanting one for over a year....I settled for the Samsung 950b, 19" and I've very happy with it. I am also very satisfied with Samsung customer service. I purchased from NewEgg.com and also very happy with NewEgg service !

I probably should have mentioned that my Samsung is in fact a beast...not meant for users with limited space.

Thanks Jodi...I just realized that I posted this in the wrong place. Sorry about that. Sounds like the LaCie is the CRT of choice by many. Oh well, I guess I will have to get out my change jar and see how far I have to go.

Hi Shane - I also chose a CRT for the reasons that you mentioned. I got a ViewSonic 19 inch and it is great. It is also BIG and but my eyes appreciate that a lot! :)

Hi Mary. I have also checked on that monitor. It is in the right price range. Glad to hear you are pleased with it.

Ok...after spending way too much time on this monitor thing this morning we have decided to move my sons CRT monitor in to replace my LCD to see what a difference it makes. It is a HP model (older) so we will see how it works. After I calibrate it I will let you know the outcome.

hmmmm, not sure using an old HP will give you any answers....years ago HP monitors weren't much use to anything more than reading word processors...

I'll throw in my 19" Dell 993 which are still available from Dell and which I've been very happy with. My wife's 19" Sony LCD is OK and takes up a lot less space but I still like my CRT best for working with images. I have a monitor/TV plastic tray thingee that sits on top so can stack all kinds of things on it - so the extra space isn't really wasted ;) .

Shane-like Mary above, I'm sold on my "Viewsonic 19"-Graphics Series G90f. There is no LCD out there now that I know of, that can touch it. I know because, I want an LCD for space reasons, but can't find one as good---yet!! Till then I'll keep looking--wife wants the CRT, so Have no choice!!

Lloyd, ya, I haven't seen an LCD yet that doesn't look like it has artificial colors...but then, i haven't had the priviledge to view any of the high performance lcd's either...2, 3 thousand bucks...they can have them. If I had $3,000 I'd by the Wacom Cintiq that I've recently been drooling over....And if i had 3000 bucks to buy a wacom cintiq then I'd also be able to afford the Lacie crt that I've been wanting...gosh, wish i had some diamonds to trade in

Well the old HP CRT is basically...well you know...crap. Jodi, looks like you knew that one up front. (LOL) I thought so but was just hoping for a miracle so I did not have to spend more money. Thanks for the suggestions on other CRTs. Looks like I am going to have to order one as not many stores carry CRTs. I think I may go with the Viewsonic unless I come up with something different between now and order time. Have a good night guys.
Hate the BRONCOS lost.

Shane,
We have a 19 inch KDE. It works great. The few times I've tried to calibrate it, I barely had to make any adjustments. (Don't know if that means I have bad eyes, or the Monitor keeps its adjustments well :) .) We used to have a 19 inch Viewsonic (F80, I [b]think[\b]), but it died... Rather suddenly and it wasn't all that old when it went. We've had the KDE for a long while, now.

Well.....I just went against the tide of this thread and bought an LCD monitor: Sony HS95P. It sure is nice, but the colors are a bit on the brilliant side. Now if I can only figure out how to adjust it...

Chuck, doesn't the SONY have it's own calibration thingy ? Thought they did...anyways, I've heard other LCD users say thet used 'Pantone Huey' to calibrate and reduce that artificial color glow..

or you can return it like a good boy and buy a good crt ;) ..or spend a few thousand on a good LCD :) I'm such a pest.

Ray, yup, that's the cheapest one ( they've been known to blow out usb ports and don't have an extremely high screen res)...but don't they only work with macs ?

Chuck - that's the one I got for my non-photoshopping wife and she loves it and I have to admit that it does look pretty good but I don't dare try fiddling with it to adjust the colours or I'll be in trouble ;)

I've never heard of the USB thing... if you have a link, I'd appreciate reading about it.
As for the high screen resolution, all LCD screens have a native resolution which should always be used for best performance. That's not just Apple's, it's all of them. My current screen is 1680 x 1050. It canot get any higher than that. It's by design for all LCD screens. But frankly, that's more than enough!
As for working with Mac only, that's never been the case with the Apple Cinema Display (maybe with the discontinued Studio Display, but that's before me). They now use DVI, which is an industry standard. Several PC video cards now ship with this connector (ATI, amongst others), as well as many living room LCD TVs (to which you can connect a Mac, btw) And if you don't have it, you can buy an inexpensive (20$ I think) DVI to VGA converter to connect to your regular PC.

Ray, I really didn't plan on twisting it but a quick search in the Apple site for user reviews brought up some of the info I mentioned....but it wasn't the only place I've read it. No big deal. Nothing is perfect. Nothing except God.

The one thing I remembered is some of the USB hubs in certain units not working, but I had never heard of any of them blowing up peripherals. I ran a quick search on Apple's Forums and found a few issues of hubs ceasing to function, though none damaging gear. But I didn't search for years and years. Only the last few months.
It's just that I wanted to know before I recommend it anymore. I don't recommend stuff that is not good (i.e. my LiDE 35 scanner, for example)
Also, when reading bad stuff about a piece of equipment, scepticism needs to be applied, always. Otherwise, all the following products (every unit of every store) would be considered defective :
- XBox 360 (i.e. the news about the kernel pannic on Day 2 after they went on sale in the world),
- XBox version 1 were burning up (i.e. Microsoft recalling a series of defective power supplies, in last October)
- Hp recalling printer electric cables because of a possible melting
- Apple recalling iBook batteries (early 2003 models I think)
Which is not true in all cases. I have a couple friend happily using their brand new XBox 360, and countless other still playing with their "old" XBox version 1. My friend bought an iBook and it's working wonderfully !
Etc...
That's it, matter close.
