I've got a problem using Elements 4.0 text - it's absolutely tiny! Even when I use 72pt it only looks like normal 14-16pt. Any ideas? Mark

Hi-welcome-
What size is the image you are working on?

Mark, welcome to the forum!

Go into Image>Resize>Image Size in the top toolbar, and I think you'll find that the inch dimensions of your image are huge - like 48 inches by 72 inches. With the resample box unchecked, change one of the inch dimensions to something reasonable, like maybe 8 inches, and you'll see that the other linear dimension and the resolution (pixels per inch) will change, too. Hit OK, then try your text layer again. I think you'll see a vast improvement.

Hi Mark

Welcome to the forums.

As the others have said it has to do with image size/resolution. Not to worry just bump up the font size

Quick example..if your document/creation is 600 dpi then 72 pt will only be approx 1/10th the size..I know the math isn't right but a rough idea.:D
I understand 1 pt to be very close to 1 pixel

Maybe I'm nuts..... a given really... But relative to the picture size a 72 pt. will be the same size. Even if one picture is 72 dpi and the next is 300 dpi... maybe I'm wrong

Butch

I was going by something I thought I read:D I may have misunderstood.

Let me give it a try in elements

I misunderstood:o :o

Sorry for any confusion

I don't understand myself. Adobe in their help says the same as above but when I made two pics 72 dpi and 300 dpi. with the same width and height. The 72 pts stayed the same relative dimensions.

Maybe a better test would be to change measurement in Preferences to pixels instead of points.

Thats what I just did as well:D

What word did you type????:D

The only way I could get the text small was to have a huge document size as Chuck suggested earlier, mind you, only with new typing.

... and welcome to the forum :)

Do let us know how you go on with this ...

It's always best to set your final resolution/size before adding text.

If nothing else this will keep your text size consistent between images. (It will not be if you make different changes to the resolution/size after adding text.)

If you want to experiment make several docs of different resolutions and add text of the same size, then view each document in "actual pixels" view to see the difference.

Here is using pixels rather than points as text size. Maybe mark you have pixels rather than points in your preferences.

Butch:

Points is a measurement in inches, I believe. Therefore, if I put 72 point text on a canvas that has measurements of 48 inches by 72 inches, it will be very small indeed. However, if I have a canvas that's only 4 inches by 6 inches, the text will be huge.

As a matter of fact, the only times I mess with inch measurements at all are for printing and for text. Otherwise, I stick with pixels...

Hi Chuck

What you are saying is what I have been saying. That the point is in relation to the size of the picture not in pixels or resolution. But what confuses me is what Adobe says about text size... From Elements help

The type size determines how large the type appears in the image. The physical size of the font depends on the resolution of the image. A capital letter in 72-point text is approximately 1-inch high in an image that is 72 ppi. Higher resolutions reduce a given text point size because the pixels are packed more tightly in higher resolution images.

They say it depends on resolution, and from what I can tell it depends on size. A 72 point text is the same one inch in a 72dpi or a 600dpi image... I think...lol

Butch, you're right: if the 72 ppi and 300 ppi images are both the same linear (inch/cm) dimensions, then the 72 point text will appear the same size in both. The Elements Help that you cited appears to be flat wrong.... Even Adobe confuses pixels and points, it would seem...

Mark,
Glad you asked that question. The exact same thing is happening to me. My image size is very big. I will try to decrease it when I get home from work to see if works.

Hi Sharon ...

Rather than decrease the size of you image why not just increase the size of your text?

I know that it doesn't show beyond 72 in the drop down menu but you can type larger sizes into the small box ... try that and see if it works OK then :)

Problem solved, thank you so much. All I did was Go into Image>Resize>Image Size as suggested. Thanks Mark

Mark ...

I am always a little wary of resizing images as you lose quality that way ... did you try the method of changing text size that I suggested to Sharon?

Thanks

At least I'm not nuts... well some of the time:D

I thought I had read something about resolution and font size. To tell the truth, I have never worried about it, I just made my fonts bigger if need be.
Interesting though that the Help is wrong:D

Gary ...

I just make them larger too :)
