Howdy all of you smart people, I have elements 2.0 and am having a problem figuring out how to make my file size small, I want my images to be 7 KB or so, seems that as small as I can create is 12 KB. I need to reduce them and cannot figure out if 2.0 version is capable. I need to do this for my website pictures so that they down load quickly. Any help would be great,

Hi there ...

... ans welcome to the forum :)

Gosh that is a very small size ... have you tried Save for Web?

If not then here are some instructions ... I am using PSE3 in the example but it works the same in PSE2 :)
---------------------------------
Resize using Save for Web ..

Open your image then do File>Save for Web
When the Save for Web dialogue box come up there is a section over on the bottom right hand side where you can change the pixels size (see A) if you tick Constrain Proportions then you only need to change the longest side. Next take a look at the new size (B) ... if it is still too big then use the quality slider (C) until the size is OK

Do let us know how you go on :)

Hello and welcome to the forums!

The best way to control the file size, especially for the web, is to use File / Save For Web. You'll have access to control the quality (under JPEG) or the number of colours (for GIF).

At the bottom of the dialog, you'll see the estimated file size as you make changes.

Hope this helps!

What size image are you wanting to post ? It would have to be a rather small image about 200px square to get an acceptable quality image for viewing at such a low kb....unless the quality doesn't matter. As mentioned by Ray you may get away with saving as a GIF depending on your image which tends to produce lower kb size images for web due to it's lower color gamut range. Definietly use the Save for Web option under the file menu.

Hello Jody,
I used to have adobe photoshop 2.0, I used that program to reduce my image file size for my website images. I just bought a new XP system Dell and the old software no longer works, Cannot afford the new adobe photoshop so I bought this Essentials 2.0. I need to have my web pics file size around 7 KB so that my entire page loads quickly. example:

http://www.neatstuff.net/avalon/a-to-f/crystal-a.html

Being I have 16 or so images per webpage, the image file needs to be small.
I need my image size to be 3 by 2 inches. as you can see by my webpage.

Kellie, I am in country Western Australia with a rather slow web connection and your website downloaded in a matter of a few seconds - so whatever size your images are now, they are great. I have never had a website download so quickly.

Ok, Essentials 2 ? The only program I know with that name is Corel Painter Essentials 2...is that what you are using ? By the way Elements 2 should have no problems running on your new XP machine. I can't recall any conflicts with SP2. Someone Slap me if i'm wrong.

Anyways, let me know what you are using to resize your images.

Jodi,

I think she has the full featured Photoshop Version 2 and could not afford to upgrade it and so purchased Elements 2. In her first post she correctly identified it as Elements and not Essentials. I think she has just not had it long enough to be used to the name.

I think Save for Web has been added since 2. I first used PS 5.5 and it seemed to me that the literature implied SFW was a fairly new feature.

Hello,
yes, my old sofware Adobe photoshop 2.0 software will not work with my new XP operating system and I cannot afford to upgrade it either. So I bought the Elements 2.0 verison, sorry it is not Essentials like I typed earlier.
Elements works just fine, but I cannot figure out how to create a picture that measure 3-2 inches with only 6 or 7 KB file size.

Yes, I have tried the save to web option, however the file size is still a hefty 17MB. and I have over 16 images on one webpage. I really want each image to be only 7 KB and sized at 3 inches long by 2 inches tall.
Maybe I need to buy the full fledge version of adobe photoshop, dunno but it is making me crazy.

Hi there ...

Did you try reducing the pixel size when using Save for Web .. ??

By the way the full version of Photoshop acts in just the same way ... so there is no advantage in getting it just for this purpose.

Hi Wendy, geeze I never had Elements 2..I know Version 1 only let me resize from within the Editor before going to SFW...I'm wondering if version 2 allowed to resize in the SFW Window ? Anyways, resizing the image to 2 X 3 inches within either editor or SFW should do the trick.

I just tested a 3x2 picture file size and you can get a 7 kb jpeg. If you are getting too big a file my guess is that your not setting to 72 dpi resolution. Try cropping to 2x3 with a 72 dpi resolution and then going into Save for Web and saving as a 20 quality jpeg. (It should be 216x144 pixels). Make sure the ICC profile box is unchecked as that adds to the file size.

Tony, I found your info to be very helpful, I have even made my file size to 3.9 KB! Thanks so very much......!

3.9kB - that's tiny :) . Glad you got it to work - you'll find the size gets smaller when you have large areas of the same colour. The extreme would be a one colour 3x2x72 dpi image which only takes up about 500 bytes.

Hello Tony,
Being you were such a life saver on my last question about file size, do you have time for a new question? Again, the old adobe photshop had that tool called Clone. Where you could 'brush' out lint and spots in the pic. does this elements 2.0 have this option? what is it called? How do you use it? HELP!

Hi there ...

You need to create your logo on its own layer thhen make sure that you just have a transparent layer below it. Also if you are going to post it on the web then save it as a Gif ...
