I hope I'm posting this question in the right folder. I've done a few queries on this issue to no avail.

I have PSE 3 on my Mac (running OS X 10.3.9). So far my biggest obstacle is that I don't seem to be able to see/have access to all of my fonts on PSE 3. For ease, I tend to use my Font Book to find a font easily that I want to use and then will switch over to PSE to choose the font from the drop down menu.

In PSE, I've noticed that I've got a listing of fonts #-S - in numerical and then alphabetical order - but not all of the ones I have are showing up in the list (as in not all of the "As" are showing up, nor are the "Bs", etc.) and then it just stops in the "Ss" for some reason (so I can't even use Times New Roman, for example). Also, I have a number of fonts that while they do show up in the font drop down list, don't seem to be available for use in PSE (mostly I've seen that with the 2Peas fonts, of which I have about 40 or so).

Any BTDT advice? Experience? Is there a place I can turn on the fonts in PSE? Does PSE only allow so many fonts to be available in its program?

Here's a screen shot of what the bottom of my font drop down list looks like in PSE. Click here. (http://www.billiau.com/test/Picture1.jpg) An example seen from the screen shot is this: I have 12 fonts that start with "O" and only ten show up in PSE. I have 37 that start with "P" and only 35 show up in PSE.

Hi Jilly,

Welcome to the forums...:)

I have Windows so I can't help with this... hopefully one of the Mac users will be along to help...

Hi Jilly ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

Has this just started to happen ... or have you always had this ?

Couple of thoughts I have are:

Have you disabled any fonts in Font book? ... and the other one is I'm not sure if there is a limit to the number of fonts that PSE3 will actually list ...

I have a feeling that I have read something somewhere about the maximum that are visible. Perhaps Ray may know ...

Jilly,

Welcome to the forums !

One thing comes to mind... would anyone of these fonts be PostScript fonts?
I think PSE will only work with either True Type or dfont... If you look in Font Book, and choose Font Info, are all fonts the same type? Take a letter, like O and look at all the fonts which name starts with an O.

Thanks for the welcome!

I've had this problem since installing PSE this fall as far as I can remember.

The only font I have disabled in Font Book is "Bahgdad."

Looking at my "O" fonts - all are either TTF or Datafork True Type (if that's what you meant by "dfont."). Of the two "O" fonts that don't show up and weren't in the list in my example screen shot - one is a TTF and the other a dfont. So much for that theory!

In my Font library I have the following types of fonts: Datafork TrueType font, Font Suitcase, PostScript Type 1 outline font, and Windows TrueType font.

And to muddy the water even more... Upon looking at my example screen shot, I noticed that none of the 15 "R" fonts are there. Twelve of which are TTF and three are Font Suitcase.

I appreciate any insight you all can give!

I am really puzzled, but 700 is a big number of fonts. Perhaps PSE is simply choking under the weight.

One more thing, do you have duplicates? They appear in Font Book with a black dot. You might try disabling duplicates.

Another idea.. have you allocated enough memory to Photoshop Elements? In Preferences / Memory & Image Cache, try to boost the amount of memory allocated to Photoshop Elements. However, if you're running low on RAM already, you might jeopardize the running speed of PSE.

Ray ...

I'm sure that I have seen somewhere about a max number of fonts that will show .... 700 is a lot even by my standards (and I'm a font addict :))

I discovered that I had over 400 fonts installed and I was in shock! I always managed to keep the list to no more than 250-280. I must have installed a software with lots of fonts recently. Better start to do some clean up :)

Thank you, Ray & Wendy, for your ideas and suggestions.

Okay, here's what I've done. I've gone through my fonts and deleted/removed 50+ fonts and am now down to 682. I went to Preferences ~> Memory & Image Cache and increased its Memory Usage to 75% (up from 50%).

What I've found is that by disabling fonts (I initially disabled all the foreign fonts, and then a whole collection) it increases the alphabet's range. By disabling all of my 2Peas fonts, it allows me to see all the way to the Ts. So apparently disabling will be what I need to do to be able to see as many as possible and/or the ones I want to use currently.

I'm still not able to see all of the fonts in, say, the Rs, but I guess I'll have to make due.

If you ever come across something you think might help me make sense of this or correct it completely, please pass it along.

In the mean time, I'm looking at getting another Gig of RAM... we'll see if that plays any part in my issue with PSE.

Thank you, again!

Jilly,

I'm a Windows users but I saw this article on Mac Fonts and thought maybe it would give you some info.

http://desktoppub.about.com/od/fonttechnologies/f/toomanyfontsmac.htm

Under Windows it's possible to use fonts that aren't installed by moving them to a separate folder and just opening the font browser for the particular font you want to use and then starting Elements. The font open in the font browser will then show up in the list of available fonts in Elements. Perhaps Elements for Mac would work similarly.

PSE (and I think full Photoshop as well) can't make use of more than 2GB of RAM. So if you thought of going over this limit to help resolve your problem, I'm afraid you'll be wasting your money.

I have never came across a font problem so I don't know what to do, really. I mean I don't like having too many fonts, I've no need for a third party font manager because Font Book is just enough for my needs.

Thanks for the link, Diana !
