When I select Help on the Photoshop Elements menu bar, I get a message saying this message: "Could not open file: file:/local host/Library/Applications%20Support/Adobe/PhotoshopElementsHelp/en_US/Cache/57/3.0/en_US/html/page/howto_ref_phptpsa7196456.html."
I've reinstalled Photoshop Elements twice, trying to overcome the problem, but still can't get Help to work.
I would appreciate any advice that would, well, help. Thanks.

Hi-I've found the Help to be practically useless,, alhough I've never received this message. Ray or Wendy should be along to answer your specific question. In the meantime, is there something in particular that you need help with? Feel free to ask here!:)

Hi there ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

There is a problem with Macs and the help files on PSE3 ... PE Help doesn't work from accounts that don't have administrative privileges. To check if you are using the Admin account ...

... click on the little apple top right hand corner
System>Preferences
then in System section click on accounts
You should be able to see Admin under your name ...

Do let us know how you go on :)

Thanks for your tip. I definitely am the administrator (and sole user) of my computer. So there must be another problem. Any ideas?:(

Hi ...

OK then lets try a few more ideas:

When you installed Elements did you disable any anti virus software
and did you repair permisssions before and after the install

another thought is what is the Mac time clock zone set to ..

By the way could you give a little more details about your system and if you have ever used any previous versions of PSE OK

Thanks, Wendy, for your reply. I am using a dual processor G5 desktop Mac, running OS 10.4.4. I have a gig of ram, 250 gig hard drive. I have used Photoshop Elements since version 1. My clock is set to Pacific Standard time. I don't have any virus programs installed. I did repair permissions both before and after installing Photoshop Elements 3 (as I do before and after every software installation).
Can I tell you anything else useful?
Thanks,
CardiffQ

I have an idea, but this is rather a long shot...

Control - Click (Right - click if you have a two button mouse) on Photoshop Elements Help icon, inside Photoshop Elements 3 folder. Choose "Show Package Content"

Go to Contents : Mac OS

Double-click on Opera. Opera is a web browser, and it's the help engine for Photoshop Elements 3. This will start Opera.

Click on Opera / Preferences, then choose History and cache (it's the 3rd option from the bottom).

Finaly, in that screen, click Empty Now, just beside Disk Cache. Click on Apply Now (at the bottom of the screen) and on Ok after that.

Quit Opera.

Hope this will solve your problems :)

Hi Ray ...

I'm pretty well out of ideas now so I'm keeping my fingers crossed about your suggestion :)

Thanks, Ray, for your suggestion. I did exactly as you suggested and...no luck. I still get the same message. Bummer. Interestingly, I also have Photoshop Elements 3 installed on my G3 iBook and the PE Help function works perfectly there. So, in one last attempt, I copied the PE Help folder from that computer and used it to replace the same folder on the G5 desktop. Still doesn't work. There must be some quirk in the G5 that's causing it. So, after all these attempts to fix it, I'm resigned to just checking the Help function on the iBook if I have a PE question, rather than trying to get the Help function to work on the G5. And, of course, I can always come back to the Forum and ask questions. Thanks to all who tried to help!

Hi Cardiff ...

I'm running a Dual G5 too and my set up it sounds similar to yours (except that I am still using 10.4.3) and my help facility is working reasonably OK. I wonder if it could be conflict with something else you have on the Mac ..

There have been quite a few problems with the help facility and Macs ... just a thought there are two ways to access help ..

... type a word into the box at the top
or ... Help>Photoshop Elements Help

Is it the same when you use both ??

I have 10.4.4 and help works fine (Dual pro 1.8Ghz). However, I did install the full version of Opera, when it became free. Could this have anything to do with my ability to use help.. ?
