Automatic selection tools video

I am following the instructions in the Automatic Selection Tools Tutorial.
To check progress on my selection I am going to Edit>Fill Selection, choosing White, OK
Temporarily hiding the selection with Control H, seeing that the edge is rough.
Next I undo the while fill (Control Z) and bring back the selection with Control H.
In the Options Bar I click Refine Edge. Here is where my problems begin.
What I get is a red background with my selection in regular color. If I click the red box, or not this is what I get.
Also, when I get the selection the way I want it, I would use Control D to deselect. Then what??
Thanks in advance for help. I am working very hard to get this.

Rita , where is the tutorial you are using. What version of pse do you have and what operating system.

Thanks for the reply. I am using the video tutorial from the drop down menu under HELP, in Elements 8. It is Adobe TV, Learn Elements 8.

Oh oh.

I think I figured it out. I was selection EXACTLY the opposite part of the image. Somehow I was selecting the background.
Will try again.:o I am Left-handed, am always seeing things backward!!

Rita , i am left handed also. Sometimes you just have to go back and redo, it can be one of those duh-- how did i miss that situations. I am glad you figured it out.
