Hello,
I am struggling with how to lighten a photo to print in a work newspaper.
The photo is much to dark and I am not sure where to start.....any suggestions.
I have Elments 6 program.

you can duplicate the background layer. Do a hue saturation adjustment layer by pulling the lighten bar to the right it will make it lighter. But i am not sure that is the best way to achieve what you are wanting i think there are better ways its just not coming to me right now.

desertbabe, try a shadows/highlights, brightness/contrast or levels.
You can apply a combination of the above.
Save each version with a different name until you find the best one and then trash the others.

Hi ...
Try this:
Duplicate the layer. Then go to the layers palette and change the blend mode of the duplicate layer to screen ...
If that makes it too light then just lower the opacity of the layer until it looks OK :)

If the photo will be used in a black & white newspaper, you can use Enhance > Convert to Black & White, then in the dialog that pops up, under Select a Style as, choose Newspaper. You can also use the Adjustment Intensity sliders to further adjust the photo to optimize for the newspaper. There is also a Reset button, if you go to far with the sliders.
