Is it possible to change the special effects filters from icons to a simple list. I find it irritating having to scroll through the icons to find a filter effect. I do use favourites but it still annoys me.

The filter tab in the Effects Palette has an option to show the name along with the icon if you desire.

Yep, I have the text options on 3 of the filter lists but not the fx list. Weird I don't know why this is.

In the Effects Panel, there are 4 lists. Filters, Layers Styles, Photos Effects and All (the fx icon). Just use the 1st 3. It divides them into their subcategories. Plus using the "Show Name" and "Small Thumbnail View" will make it easier to view and find them.
