Well I evetually managed to install Elements 8 after uninstalling 7 and deleting a Local Machines registry key that file associated .tga files.
The first quirk I have found is that I cannot use Premiere Elements 7 with PSE 8. Every time you try it asked you to install PE8. I hope this is fixed as I believe they are trying to force you to upgrade elements.
I am surprised that the organiser doesn't recognise pets faces especially as it recognised a certain area of bricks on my chimney stack as a face.
It would be nice to get rid on the intro screen on startup. Is there any way to do this?
I am pleased with the guides and especially transform selection tool.
I will press on.
regards

Go into the program files and find the actual .exe file(s) for the editor and/or organizer, right click and choose to make a desktop shortcut. Then use the shortcut to startup and go to the component of your choice without the welcome screen.

I am surprised that the organiser doesn't recognise pets faces The technology that all these programs use for recognizing faces is very specific to humans -- it recognizes that visual features that characterize a human face. Nothing in principle would prevent the same technology from being "trained" to recognize animal faces, but it's likely that Adobe doesn't see as much value in that.

It would be interesting to conduct a poll on this as I would say that many users would take more pictures of pets than humans.

I'd love that feature, but it would find too many zoo pics in my catalog. And I don't want to tag all the zoo animals!!:D

Do you know you may have hit on the reason they don't do it, as primates could become embarrassing.

Hi, your quote sounds familiar. I've had a couple of issues when trying to reinstall pse6 w/vista on new pc, and realized it had something to do with licensing. Still confused and aggravated, I proceeded to upgrade/purchase the new pse8.

Everything was good until I reach 99% of the installation only for it to 'roll back' when arriving at the registry area, which is the last part of the installation. Unfortunately, it rolls back and thus reverses the installation process. Please let me know what do you mean by deleting a local machines registry key? This might be my problem.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Facial recognition is a pretty tough technical challenge; I know a bunch of people who have spent years working on it, and they constantly hear, "I want my pets, too." The problem is that it's hard enough dealing with human faces - once you start adding dogs, cats, gerbils and more, it becomes unbelievably more complex.

One friend said, "it will happen, but it's at least 10 years away."

Of course, the idea that we'd be able to even attempt to recognize a face, let alone be partway successful, is a pretty amazing thing.

fwiw,
Rick

Hi Frustrated Catherine :):)

Messing with the Registry can be a very dangerous thing. One false move and - poof!! - PC don't work no more

However, when I had problems reinstalling PSE8, after I had tried to rebuild the thumbsdatabase.db3 file, I deleted various registry entires which seemed to do the trick. I used a program called Registry Workshop which enabled me to find entries related to PSE8.

Windows XP has its own inbuilt registry editor called Regedit which can be used but I preferred to use something more substantial.

Don't know whether this will help you or not.

Yep I assume you are running vista. Vista has real problems with it's permissions i.e. it prevents programs installing because they cannot get permission to write to or overwrite keys in the registry. You need to run your registry editor (be extremely careful if you are not sure what to do in here as deleting the wrong thing can kak your OS). Run your install PSE8 again and look at the error and it will tell you the path of the problem i.e. You can either write down the path and then delete the .tga key or search for .tga in the registry editor and locate it under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE/Classes/.tga and right-click and delete the whole key. Should work for XP as well. This seems a long standing windows bug with tga file associations.
