Hi All,
I have a strange problem... After importing AVCHD clips in Premiere 7 my PSE organizer has begun to crash few seconds after load.
Here are the details:
- My Organizer is running fine
- Importing video in PRE7 (no problems)
- Open Organizer and it starts crashing
Now I create a new catalog (by holding down SHIFT+ALT+CTRL when the Organizer is loading), and the new empty catalog is running fine. Now I return to PRE7 and import a new AVCHD movie... And voila my Organizer is crashing with the new catalog.
My setup:
- Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 - 32-bit
- 3 gb of ram
- 2 x 500 gb of harddisk
Any suggestions?

Hi cyberioten ...
I'll transfer your message over to the Premiere elements section as I think you may get more replies if it is in there :)

I have found an answer to the problem...
See http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44991&highlight=organizer+crashes+video+import
I got exately the same problem. How do I avoid .m2ts-files to be put into organizer when importing with PRE7 from my camera?

Correct me if any of my assumptions are incorrect. Suggestions are pending better ones from JohnRellis. At this time, I am not sure if downloading a specific codec package would address the issue. I would need to do more homework on that.
From your description, it sounds like you are transferring your AVCHD + photos to your computer (probably USB) which is triggering the Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 Photo Downloader. If that is the case, you are given the opportunity to check the files that you want downloaded from the camcorder. Just check off the photos.
Then repeat the process, but this time cancel out the Photoshop Elements 7 Media Downloader that pops up, and copy the video to your computer hard drive. Then bring that into the Premiere Elements Organizer via Get Media/Files & Folders from the saved hard drive location, BUT....
Photoshop Elements 7 and Premiere Elements 7 share a common database (one catalog system), so, when you successfully place your video in the Premiere Elements Organizer, you will end up with thumbnails for them in the Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer, first hour glass type, and after Update Thumbnail with Audio looking content. So.....
I would suggest that you create two catalogs in Photoshop Elements 7, one for photos and one for video. And, use the photo catalog in Photoshop Elements 7 and the video catalog in Premiere Elements 7 (video editor). There is no problem bringing .m2ts into the Premiere Elements Organizer, whether you have one or two catalogs.
In the above case where I suggest two separate downloads, you could just cancel out of the Adobe Photoshop Photo Downloader, and copy everything to the computer hard drive. Then import the photos into Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer and the videos into Premiere Elements 7 Organizer.
The degree of your problem is probably being compounded by the .m2ts being an unsupported file for Photoshop Elements 7 (photo editor) and the numbers of these .m2ts videos that you are trying to bring into the program and the level of available RAM.
This is not a fix, but it is curious that the Photoshop Elements 7 Photo Downloader names the .m2ts an unsupported files, whereas, if you rename the .m2ts to .m2t, the Photo Downloader looks at it as a video file. However, the thumbnail appearance and not being able to playback the video from the Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer are the same.
If the 2 catalog system is of interest, I can describe the basics of how to do that. I could go into a variety scenarios that I tried and the results obtained, but I will stop here and await your comments.

If that is the case, you are given the opportunity to check the files that you want downloaded from the camcorder. Just check off the photos.
A way to speed that up: Click Advanced Dialog at the bottom of the downloader window. Then next to Show at the top-left, click the Image icon to show images only.

Hi ATR,
I would like to hear from you, if you find a solution with a codec or something.
Some answers to you:
- I have used the "Get media"-panel in PRE7 and "AVCHD or other hard disk/memery camcorder" to import the movies from my camcorder to the PRE7 project.
- The files are imported to different folders and saved as .mts files.
About the solution:
So the solution is - as I understand - that I create to catalogs. One for my PSE7 and one for PRE7. Should I open the catalog each time I shift programs, or can they use their own?
I can live with two catalogs and would not have the videos together with my photo's from the begining.

This is how I would go about creating one catalog for photos for Photoshop Elements 7 and another catalog for videos for Premiere Elements 7. The important thing to remember is that you can create new catalogs in Photoshop Elements that can be used in Premiere Elements, but you cannot create new catalogs in Premiere Elements.
Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer Phase 1
1. Open Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer and go to:
File Menu
Catalog
Catalog Manager
In the Catalogs area of the Catalog Manager, you will have choices for:
a. Catalogs Accessible by All Users
b. Catalogs Accessible by the Current User
c. Custom Location
I selected a.
In the box below that, you will see "Version 7 Catalog [Current].
2. Click the New button in the Catalog Manager. When you do, you will get a "Multiple Catalog Warning" message. Just click OK for now.
Enter a name for the new catalog in the next dialog that appears.
I named the new catalog "Version 7 Video Catalog.
There are a bunch of music files in Photoshop Elements 7 program files that you can include in the new catalog. Decide yes or no to that by checking and unchecking "Import free music into this catalog." Click OK to close out of this dialog.
3. Here I need to back track to rename the original catalog and check things out. So, once again in Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer, click on File Menu/Catalog. I renamed "Version 7 Catalog" to "Version 7 Photo Catalog", followed by OK. Next I highlighted "Version 7 Photo Catalog" and clicked on Open. Then I closed out of Photoshop Elements 7.
Premiere Elements 7 Organizer Phase 2
1. Open Premiere Elements 7 with a project preset in new project dialog = NTSC DV Standard (for this it does not matter, but you have to put something, so I selected on the default).
2. In the Premiere Elements 7 Organizer interface, click on File Menu/Open Catalog. The Catalog Selection dialog will open with a message "Changing current catalog will close and reopen the current project. Proceed? I clicked OK.
3. An Open Catalog dialog appears. Double click "Version 7 Video Catalog" in the list. That is the one that we just created in Photoshop Elements 7. After you do that, you will see 2 files:
syncdb
catalog.pse7db
Click "catalog.pse7db"
The project then closes and reopens in the new catalog in the project that you opened to establish your new "Version 7 Video Catalog".
Until you change the above arrangement, Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer will display what you import into the Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer, and Premiere Elements 7 Organizer will display what you import into the Premiere Elements Organizer. The prior arrangement (1 catalog) is no longer in existence where what you see in the Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer is what you see displayed in the Premiere Elements 7 Organizer.
Please let me know if that works for you.

Hi ATR,
Thanks for the guide. I was way a head of you and had already created the Catalogs. Anyway it is working...
I could not have guested that the two programs could have a catalog each.
Now I only have one problem left - I will create a new post about this (c:

I am glad that the new catalog arrangement is working for you.
By the way, did you get a chance to look at how your video card/transitions issue fix is taking off. Another believer, over there now.

Yeah, my PRE7 is running fine now but slow when editing large projects of AVCHD-movie clips. Therefore my next project is to add more RAM. But to do that I need to upgrade my system til 64-bit. I think I'll do that when Windows 7 is released.
I think my Motherboard supports up to 12 Gb of ram. But as you know Vista 32-bit only allocates up to 3 gb of ram.

I have some things for you to think about.
Premiere Elements is a 32 bit application and runs in a 64 bit system in the 32 bit compatibility of that 64 bit system.
So, from the point of view of RAM, even if you have a 64 bit system with 12 GB RAM, while Premiere Elements is running in the 64 bit's 32 bit compatibility mode, the max utilization RAM is 4 GB (that is, memory addressing down from 4 GB).
It is my understanding that you will not gain the full benefits of the 64 bit system unless you are running a 64 bit application which Premiere Elements is not likely to become in the near future???

Damn, then I have to uptimize in another way. I can not edit large HD-projects without waiting - sometimes 3-10 min - while the PRE7 is loading something. Currently Pre7 is using 800 Mb - 1 Gb of ram.
Could you point me to a post regarding uptimizing the computer working with large project (30-40 min of HD movie)? I cant find some usefull.
Can I work with the files in a 'lower preview quality' and first when rendering work with the 'high-quality'-files? I have no problem rendering the file, it is only the workspace that works so slowly!
