Hi,

I'm new to Adobe Premier Elements 7 and am having a few issues.....

I'd really appreciate some help and advice (I've tried for ages to figure these issues out myself, and I'm a "read the instructions" fan, and technically minded, but I'm a bit stumped....)

1) I have a wonderful Sony AVCHD Handycam. When I upload the images, APE plays the footage with a stutter - the audio is fine, but the image is jerky. This DOES NOT happen when I use other players on my computer - hence I've deduced it must be APE. Would LOVE to fix that!

2) Trying to upload to YouTube. Have done so (clip plays fine - ie no stutter as seen when I play the clip in the APE program itself - as descr in prev point). However, in the upload process, I am unable to change the quality level (stuck at medium) and hence my YouTube upload is of less quality than it should be....

3) Also, does anyone know how to trim a clip down? I'd love to cut off/out sections of my videos, but can't figure out how to do that either..... If I do crop a clip, does APE alter my original file (ie, the neg is now changed forever.....) - I want to preserve my originals.....

I'd really appreciate some help as I need to upload footage to YouTube for a Rally.

Thanks :)

1) What happens to the "stutter" after you Render the Timeline in the Edit Mode of the program by pressing the Enter key of your computer main keyboard? This Rendering the Timeline gives you the best possible preview of the end product. It does not impact quality.
Also, jerky video can be related to a Fields issue. Have you right clicked the video on the Timeline, selected Field Options, and experimented with the options there, like Reverse Field Dominance?

2. You should use Share/Personal Computer/and one of the export choices. There is an Advance Button for each of the choices, except DV AVI. Under the Advance Button you will find settings that can be changed, bitrate, frame size, etc. Check out the following FAQ from the Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe for comments on this topic:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/390608?tstart=0

3. In your reading of the Premiere Elements Help PDF (See Help Menu of program), did you run across trimming clips in the Timeline? Check it out, but the following are some steps to get you started:
1. Organizer/Get Media/Files & Folders, Open video.
2. Click on Edit Tab (Orange), then click on Project Tab (Black) below Edit Tab
3. In Project Media View, double click your video file there
4. That will bring up a Preview Window that has the IN and OUT points that you will use to split your video into clips
5. Below the video in the Preview Window Monitor there is a thick purple bar. Look to the gray tab at the start top of that purple bar.
6. Move the gray tab to where you want the clip to start. Then click SetIn.Then move that same gray tab to where you want the clip to end. Then click SetOut.
a. Click the video clip in the Preview Window Monitor and drag it to the Timeline.
b. you can also save this video clip as a subclip that will become part of the media in the Project View media. To make a subclip, click and drag the video clip in the Preview Window Monitor to the right to a blank space in the Project Media. When you release the mouse, a pop up "Make subclip" dialog will appear. Name the subclip and click OK.
c. Continue the process until you have made all the clips you want from the video on the Timeline and/or subclips in the Project Media View.
d. I would suggest that you go back to the original file in the Project Media View, double click it, and set the IN OUT points so that the file represents the whole video again.

This is a non destructive process.

Please update me on your progress.
