Layer Styles

I have PE7 and For some reason i'll select a layer and then ill go to Layer-->Layer Style-->Style Settings
and then it wont let me click it...its like grayed out or whatever...not sure why but i'd really like to use layer styles any got any ideas what i'm doing wrong?

Hi Chrizzle... welcome to Elements Village.

Before you can adjust the style settings, you must apply a Layer Style. That is done from the Effects palette on the right side of the workspace... click the second icon (hover your cursor over it to see the title), then click on the dropdown menu to see the sets of layer styles. Once you choose and apply a layer style, you can use the menu selection you mentioned, or you can double-click on the small fx symbol on the layer to get a dialog with even more adjustments you can make to the layer style you applied.

also - styles can't be applied to the background layer - make sure you've got a different layer selected (or if you want to put a style on the background layer, either duplicate it (press [Ctrl]+[J]) or double-click it to give it a new name. Then you can apply a style ;) )

My issue is similar in that it is associated with the Layer Styles and effects, however I don't have any gallery items showing in the Effects Palette at all... it is completely empty. Is there a setting somewhere I need to adjust - or is it a REINSTALL situation.:(
