Hello to one and all,

I hope someone can help me. I am looking to use text within a circle - that is: a circle within a circle with text in between the two circles - confused - I hope not?

I have an iMac (leopard OS 10.5) and have PSE 6 installed. I am fairly new to the forum (just starting to feel my way around) and would like to do something like this. At least give it a try. Can anyone help?

A quick point of clarification: I don't necessarily need my text to touch either wall or side of the circle wall . If there is a step that shows me how to align or actually touch the walls with text - show me that step, or not touch the walls as in being a specific distance from either wall of the circle (ie text 1" in from the inner circle wall and 2" in from the outer circle wall, please show me that step too if possible. I know I am asking a lot!

If I draw a line around the outside of a half dollar then place a quarter approximately in the middle of that circle and draw another line around the outside of the quarter - that area between the inner and outer circle but not necessarily the size of the circles I have stated here as an example.

Please understand, being older than dirt, I need a step by step method (time to absorb the info - process it and understand why I just did what I did). Now where did I put that pointe thing. :p

To just blindly follow isn't necessarily what I am looking to do. I want to see the move, understand the move as to why it was done this way and see the many steps that gives me my result. Hope I haven't asked for too much. I have the confidence that someone has that information and is willing to bestow it on an old codger like me. NO!, it's not bedtime for Bonzer yet!

Please be specific regarding all steps, being fairly new to the forum, I don't want to get lost in the many steps or moves that I know will be required to accomplish the end result. Be patient and explain if necessary, I will just try to lie here and be parient - like patient dirt. Haven't you ever thought of dirt as being patient!

Also, is there a way to use text between two ovals or between two rectangles, or between other similar shaped objects? If someone could point the way, show me a good tutorial, or another forum member's link, or a new twist you have used, I am willing, eager to learn and most of all - thankful there are others out there that are willing to help! Most thankful!

Many, many thanks to one and all!

The Old Village Codger ;)

Open new, blank file (File>new>blank file), background white
Using horizontal type tool, place text on 2 layers. Here I entered "text on" on one layer, "curve" on another layer
Apply warped arc=100% to each layer (Layer>type>warp text) - dialog comes up
Rotate lower text layer 180 degrees (Image>rotate layer 180 degrees)
Access move tool and position the two arcs of text by draqgging with mouse or using arrow keys on keyboard
Open new blank layer at top of stack (Layer>new>layer)
Access Elliptical marquee tool, and while holding down shift key, drag out outer circle . Position and resize with move tool
Go to Edit>stroke>Outside to define the outer circle
Do the same for the inner circle.
Here is the layer structure that you should end up with.

JAW, PSE cannot write text on a path without a lot of manipulations. If you have some circular text from another source, you can easily add circles around it, or you can make your two circles and one-by-one, place letters (each on its own layer) where you want them.

That said, here is a work-around for making circular text (to which you could add your circles afterward:

1. Create a new square page that is square (say, 6" x 6") with 300ppi, and a white background. A 6" square will produce a 3" circle.

2. Using the horizontal type tool, chose the font you want to use (ie., Goudy Old Style) and size (ie., 22 pt.), with the LEFT alignment selected. Starting at the FAR LEFT extreme of your page, type your word/s, making sure to end at the extreme RIGHT edge of the page. You may have to play around with the font and/or size to get this to stretch exactly from side to side.

3. Duplicate the type layer (CTRL J). Click back on the original type layer and click the eye to close it.

4. Select the copy type layer. Go to Image>Rotate Layer> 180 degrees. Right click on the type layer and click on SIMPLIFY. Click CTRL T and in the hieght box, enter 250.

5. Go to Filter>Distort>Polar Co-ordinates. Select "Rectangular to Polar" and click OK.

Your text should now be in a circle. Now you can use the elliptical marquee tool to draw circles, or choose one of the pre-made circles from the custom-shape tool. Let us know if you don't know how to accomplish the circles, and we can walk you thru that too.

PS: I did this following my instructions, and the type actually turned out elongated. So I just used the transform/move tool to push in the sides and "undistort" it.
