I'm using a grunge brush set that I downloaded and I can't seem to figure out how to rotate and flip the brush so that it fits on the opposite side of the pix. I know its probably super easy. Can someone please clue me in? Thanks!

I can help with the rotating, but not the flipping. When you have the Brush Tool selected, at the top of the menu bar is another brush. Click there for your brush options. At the bottom, is where you can change the rotation of the brush.

To FLIP:

If your brush (stamp) is on its own layer (which is wise in any case), you can select the move tool so that there is a selection around the printed brush. Grab the little handle in the center of one of the sides, and pull it back on itself and out the other side. I hope this is clear. I don't know how else to describe it....sort of like pulling a sock inside-out!

Thanks Johnny and Shar. Just the info I was looking for! And pulling it inside out does makes sense Shar. Thank you both!

Another way of flipping it over (again the brush stroke has to be on its own layer) is to do Image>Rotate>Flip Layer Horizontally :)

Can someone explain to me what "Brushes" do? I saw an ad on MPIX.com for "20 Free Brushes". To me they look like grungy backgrounds. If that's what they are, how do you use them? Thanks.

Hi ...

Are you a subscriber to the Villages subscribers area ?

Photoshop Elements Techniques (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/)

If so then the tutorials there will help you learn how to use brushes ...

Generally Grunge Brushes are used to add character to images, you can also use them to scuff up edges too :)

Brushes can be used in many ways. One ways is similar to a brush in real life and you can use it to paint on your image. Another way to use a brush is to just click once and use it as a stamp. This is more common for "special" brushs like grundge brushes, frame brushes, swirl brushes, etc. These types of brushs can add a bit more flair to your images. To use them is very easy. When you click on your Brush Tool, at the the top of your menu bar you can see a "preview" of your currently active brush. Click there to see your current brush set and then click on the double-arrows on the right side. When you click you will get a list of options. Near the bottom is Load Brushes. Select this to load a new set of brushes you have download and you can use them.

Shar,
I looked at your gallery and saw a picture of a boy on a bicycle with the caption "Adrenalize". Would it be possible for you to give me some instructions on how to complete that project. I would like to do something like that with some football pictures for a friend's son. Thanks.

Shar - LOL, I can see where it can quickly become addictive!

I have a follow up question if anyone is still along on this thread....
I d/l what I thought were brushes, turns out they are called vectors and are in an .ai file???? I found where my other .ai files are kept and I moved them into that file (in postscript patterns) but I don't know how to find and/or use them. Can you help me out? (yet again). Thanks.

I should say I can't find the .ai files within elements. I found the files on the hard drive, but don't know where to look for them within pse7.

.ai files are Adobe Illustrator vector files. The Custom Shapes in PSE are also vector drawings - PSE can open Illustrator files. I quote (from PSE7 Help) . . . You can place PDF, Adobe® Illustrator®, or EPS files into a new layer in an image. Because the placed artwork is rasterized (bitmapped), you cannot edit text or vector data in placed artwork. The artwork is rasterized at the resolution of the file into which it is placed.

In the Editor, open the image into which you want to place the artwork.
Choose File > Place, select the file you want to place, and click Place.

So - looks like you can use these files but will not get the benefit of the vector art.

Good luck,

Steve

Thanks Steve for your reply. The vectors that I d/l are all on one image with a transparent background. I opened the file in elements using file open and navigating thru the computer to the file folder that contains all the .ai files.

I then used the lasso tool to select just one and copied it into a new layer. Then I did a select all and define brush and was able to get it to work that way. I still think there must be an easier way, but as long as I can get it to work, I'm happy.
