I'd like to break up my master catalog and reassign some files to a new catalog (s). I am not sure how to do this. Thanks in advance

Start a new catalog and import photos into it. Then go back to the original catalog and remove those same photos from it. Be sure to not remove them from the hard disk. Of course, you can also leave them in the first catalog.

Please note that it is usually not a good idea to have multiple catalogs. You lose the ability to search for photos across the two (or more) different catalogs. Further, if you follow Juergen's method, you will lose: version sets, albums/collections, stacks, creations, and a few other minor features.

Another method, for PSE 6 and 7: Do Help > System Info to find the location of your catalog folder. Using Windows Explorer, make a copy of that folder, giving it the name of your new catalog. Double-click the file "catalog.psedb" or "catalog.pse7db" within that new folder to open that copy of the catalog. Delete all the files you don't want.
But I agree with Paige that it's usually better to have one catalog than multiple ones. If you explain why you want multiple catalogs, perhaps we can provide alternative methods for using a single catalog that will accomplish what you want.

I have about 14000 images in my catalog. I am beginning to scan some of my negatives and slides and will probably double this number over the next year.
Some of my images are of business events, that I don't really need, but don't want to lose.
I currently have a situation where PSE7 is redating my images when I open them, thus losing the original file date and sorting by date. This started yesterday. I am looking for a way to protect my historic files to keep their creation date for sorting and thought moving my very little referenced images to another catalog would be a way to do this

I recommend that you hold off on splitting your catalog until we can possibly make progress on your redating problem (in the other thread). That problem is one I've never heard of before, and there's a real chance that it's going to affect every catalog you make.

That is also a concern of mine too.
Thanks
