I have a problem I am hoping someone can help me with. I have set my JPEG file viewing preferences to use Windows Fax Viewer. This is working fine, even when I am viewing pictures on a CD. However, when I choose print this file (from the CD), Elements 3 is opening up! I would like to be able to use the fax viewer as the default when I am using a CD, not Elements 3. When I am printing in Windows fax viewer from my hard drive I don't have this problem. Kind of weird, I know, I hope I have explained this right.

Hi Pat and Welcome to the forum

I have a couple of questions to hopefully narrow down your problem. Where are you when you ask to print this image and how do you find that option?

If you are in PSE I don't think there is any way to bypass their print set up. Let us know your steps that you took - we will have some ideas I am sure.:)

In Windows Explorer look in Folder Options and the File Types tab go down to JPG and Click on Advanced. You'll probably find Print there as an action, Click on Edit and you'll find the application it uses to print with and it probably says PhotoshopElementsEditor. You should be able to change this to the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. The only catch is I don't know where that application is stored but it should be possible to do it.

Beware that I'm no expert on Windows so if you change it and it messes everything up don't blame me (but there is always system restore!)

Pat,
Before changing anything set a restore point.

Thanks so far for everyone's input. Here is what I am doing with my CD

1. Put Cd in drive
2. Click on my pictures
3. Click on my computer
4. Click on my CD Drive
5. Picture files load onto screen
6. Click on Print this file, Elements opens up
If I click on Preview, Elements opens up
If I double click the file, Windows Fax viewer opens up

I have set file options to open all jpeg files with windows fax viewer, but the advanced button is grayed out when I choose this option. I can open the file in the fax viewer and then print with windows, but I don't want to have to go through all those steps. I can't figure out why it doesn't do this when I pick a picture file that is on my hard drive. It only does it with a CD file.
By the way, I burned the CD files through Windows.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Pat

I've never tried printing from Windows XP (I have Pro on this laptop), but here's what I've found in trying to do so:

When I go to My Pictures and click once on an image file (PSD, TIFF, and JPEG, but not RAW) I get a list of choices on the left side of the screen. One of those is Print This Picture, and when I click on that choice, the Photo Printing Wizard opens up and takes me through a multi-screen menu. Pretty neat, actually!

FYI, my image files are set up to open with IrfanView; that doesn't seem to interfere in any way with the Print function. I also haven't found any options (yet) to change the program that opens when I click on Print This Picture.

Not very helpful; just another data point. Sounds like the key is figuring out how to change the choice of program associated with the Print this Picture selection.
