I notice when I use the included camera software to capture to the computer that I get files with the .m2t extension and when I copy directly from the sd card I get .mts extension. Both files seem to work fine in Premiere so far, but I am wondering if Premiere handles the files differently. Are they basically the same?

Basically the same as far as I can determine at this point.......

I have not arrived at the definitive answer yet, but here is where I am at.

That .mts file extension is used by Canon and some other camcorder manufacturers for its raw high definition files. The .mts file extension has more to do with transmission referring to MPEG transport stream rather than video audio compression. So, if the "copied" files from the SD card are showing files with .mts, I am not surprised that is the case.

I believe that I have read more than once that the Canon video "captured" to the computer hard drive (in this case with Pixela Image Mixer Software) would have the .m2t file extension. Further, you will see reports that the .m2t file extension is a synonym for .mts/.m2ts. Those latter reports are the ones that I am trying to fit rather than squeeze them in to my understanding of the confusing issue of HDV and AVCHD file extensions.

With wrapper formats/file extensions, compression formats, and all the rest of the new HDV/BluRay age, there is a lot to sort out.

I will try to see if I can come up with a cleaner answer. But, the good news is that so far the difference that you see in file extension has not impacted your workflow.

I will be watching for your progress and will update you when I get more information.

Thanks ATR...my main concern was whether either file type caused any problems in Premiere. As I work with them, if I have any issues I'll post about them.

Any feedback on working with Premiere Elements and those .mts and related file extensions would be greatly appreciated and a great contribution.
